The Royal Hours

If Christmas Eve falls on Saturday or Sunday (and therefore Christmas falls on Sunday or Monday), the Royal Hours are read on the preceding Friday. In such a case, the Liturgy is not celebrated on Friday.)

First Hour

A stand is set up in the middle of the church for the Gospel book. The priest vested in epitrachelion and phelonion, opens the curtain and begins:

P: Blessed is our God, always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

R: Amen. Glory to Thee, O God, glory to Thee!

O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth; who art everywhere and fillest all things; Treasury of blessings, and Giver of life; come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us! (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

O most-holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, cleanse us from our sins. O Master, pardon our transgressions. O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy Name's sake.

Lord, have mercy. (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed by Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

P: For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

R: Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (12x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Come, let us worship God our King!

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and our God!

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God!

As the Psalms are chanted, the priest opens the royal doors, takes the Gospel and places it in the center of the Church, after which he makes a full censing of the Church beginning by censing around the Gospel, and concluding by censing before it.

1 Give ear to my words, O LORD;

give heed to my groaning.

2 Hearken to the sound of my cry,

my King and my God,

for to thee do I pray.

3 O LORD, in the morning thou dost hear my voice;

in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for thee, and watch.

4 For thou art not a God who delights in wickedness;

evil may not sojourn with thee.

5 The boastful may not stand before thy eyes;

thou hatest all evildoers.

6 Thou destroyest those who speak lies;

the LORD abhors bloodthirsty and deceitful men.

7 But I through the abundance of thy steadfast love

will enter thy house,

I will worship toward thy holy temple

in the fear of thee.

8 Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness

because of my enemies;

make thy way straight before me.

9 For there is no truth in their mouth;

their heart is destruction,

their throat is an open sepulchre,

they flatter with their tongue.

10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;

let them fall by their own counsels;

because of their many transgressions cast them out,

for they have rebelled against thee.

11 But let all who take refuge in thee rejoice,

let them ever sing for joy;

and do thou defend them,

that those who love thy name may exult in thee.

12 For thou dost bless the righteous, O LORD;

thou dost cover him with favor as with a shield.

Psalm 45

1 My heart overflows with a goodly theme;

I address my verses to the king;

my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.

2 You are the fairest of the sons of men;

grace is poured upon your lips;

therefore God has blessed you for ever.

3 Gird your sword upon your thigh, O mighty one,

in your glory and majesty!

4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously

for the cause of truth and to defend the right;

let your right hand teach you dread deeds!

5 Your arrows are sharp

in the heart of the king's enemies;

the peoples fall under you.

6 Your divine throne endures for ever and ever.

Your royal scepter is a scepter of equity;

7 you love righteousness and hate wickedness.

Therefore God, your God, has anointed you

with the oil of gladness above your fellows;

8 your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia.

From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad;

9 daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor;

at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.

10 Hear, O daughter, consider, and incline your ear;

forget your people and your father's house;

11 and the king will desire your beauty.

Since he is your lord, bow to him;

12 the people of Tyre will sue your favor with gifts,

the richest of the people

13 with all kinds of wealth.

The princess is decked in her chamber with gold-woven robes;

14 in many-colored robes she is led to the king,

with her virgin companions, her escort, in her train.

15 With joy and gladness they are led along

as they enter the palace of the king.

16 Instead of your fathers shall be your sons;

you will make them princes in all the earth.

17 I will cause your name to be celebrated in all generations;

therefore the peoples will praise you for ever and ever.

Psalm 46

1 God is our refuge and strength,

a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change,

though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;

3 though its waters roar and foam,

though the mountains tremble with its tumult. [Selah]

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy habitation of the Most High.

5 God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;

God will help her right early.

6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;

he utters his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD of hosts is with us;

the God of Jacob is our refuge. [Selah]

8 Come, behold the works of the LORD,

how he has wrought desolations in the earth.

9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;

he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear,

he burns the chariots with fire!

10 "Be still, and know that I am God.

I am exalted among the nations,

I am exalted in the earth!"

11 The LORD of hosts is with us;

the God of Jacob is our refuge. [Selah]

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O God. (3x)

Lord, have mercy. (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Troparion

Tone 4

Mary was of David's seed,

So she went with Joseph to register in Bethlehem.

She bore in her womb the fruit not sown by man.

The time for the birth was at hand.

Since there was no room at the inn,

The cave became a beautiful palace for the queen.

Christ is born, raising up the image that fell of old!

When Christmas Day falls on Sunday or Monday, so that the Royal Hours are served on December 22 or 23, the Troparion at all the hours is as follows:

Troparion

Tone 4

Prepare, O Bethlehem,

For Eden has been opened to all.

Adorn yourself, O Ephratha,

For the Tree of Life blossoms forth from the virgin in a cave.

Her womb is a spiritual paradise planted with the Fruit Divine;

If we eat of it, we shall live forever and not die like Adam.

Christ is coming to restore the imagse which He made in the beginning.

R: Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

What shall we call you, O full of grace? Heaven, for from you shone forth the Sun of Righteousness; Paradise, for you have budded forth the flower of immortality; Virgin, for you have remained undefiled; pure Mother, for you have remained undefiled. Beseech Him to save our souls.

Tone 8

Make ready, O Bethlehem.

Let the manager be prepared.

Let the cave show its welcome.

The truth comes and the shadow flees.

God is born of a virgin and revealed to men.

He is clothedin our flesh, and makes it divine.

Therefore Adam is renewed, and cries out with Eve,

Thy favor has appeared on earth, O Lord,

For the salvation of the human race.

Vs: God shall come from Teman, and the Holy One from the dark and shady mountain.

Now the prophecy approaches its fulfillment.

For it has mystically proclaimed:

"You, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

Are by no means the least among Judah's rulers!"

Prepare your cave!

From you the Ruler of the Nations comes to me in the Flesh:

Christ our God, born of a young virgin!

He will feed His flock, the new Israel.

Let us all give Him glory!

Vs: O Lord, I have heard what Thou have done, and am filled with awe.

Vs: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Joseph said to the virgin:

What has happened to you, O Mary?

I am troubled; what can I say to you?

Doubt clouds my mind; depart from me!

What has happened to you, O Mary?

Instead of honor, you bring me shame.

Instead of joy, you fill me with grief.

Men who praised me will blame me.

I cannot bear condemnation from every side.

I received you, a pure virgin in the sight of the Lord.

What is this that I now see?

Vs: Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

And immediately the Prokeimenon of the Prophecy follows:

R: The Prokeimenon of the Prophecy in the Fourth Tone.

The Lord said to me: Thou are my Son,

this day have I begotten Thee. (Psalm 2)

Vs: Ask of me, and I shall give Thee the nations for Thine inheritance, and the ends of the earth as Thy possession.

D: Wisdom!

R: The reading from the Prophet Micah. (Micah 5:2-4)

D: Let us attend.

R: Thus says the Lord: But you, Bethlehem, house of Ephratha, are little among the thousands of Judah, yet from you shall come forth to me Him Who is to be ruler in Israel, and His going forth is from the beginning, from the days of eternity. So the Lord will abandon His people to their enemies until the time when she who is in travail has given birth; then the remnant of His brethren will be converted to the children of Israel. And He shall stand, and feed His flock in the strength of the Lord, and they shall abide in the glory of the Name of the Lord their God, and they shall magnify Him even to the ends of the earth.

The Epistle and Gospel follow immediately. The priest proclaims the Gospel from the center of the church. The Gospel is not preceded by censing.

D: Wisdom!

R: The reading from the Epistles to the Hebrews (1:1-12)

P: Let us attend!

R: In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets; but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature, upholding the universe by his word of power. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has obtained is more excellent than theirs. For to what angel did God ever say, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"? Or again, "I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son"? And again, when he brings the first-born into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him." Of the angels he says, "Who makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire." But of the Son he says, "Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever, the righteous scepter is the scepter of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with the oil of gladness beyond thy comrades." And, "Thou, Lord, didst found the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of thy hands; they will perish, but thou remainest; they will all grow old like a garment, like a mantle thou wilt roll them up, and they will be changed. But thou art the same, and thy years will never end."

D: And that we may be made worthy to listen to the Holy Gospel, let us pray to the Lord God.

Pp: Lord, have mercy. (3x)

D: Wisdom! Let us attend! Let us listen to the Holy Gospel.

P: Peace be to all!

Pp: And to your spirit.

P: The reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (Matthew 1:18-25)

Pp: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee!

D: Let us attend!

P: 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; 19 and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; 21 she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." 22 All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.

After the Gospel, the reader continues:

R: Order my steps in Thy word, and so shall no wickedness have dominion over me. Deliver me from the wrongful dealings of men, and so shall I keep Thy commandments. Show the light of Thy countenance upon Thy Servant, and teach me Thy statutes. Let my mouth be filled with Thy praise, O Lord, that I may sing of Thy glory and honor all the day long.

Pp: Amen.

Kontakion

Tone 3

Today the virgin comes to the cave

Where she will give birth to the Eternal Word.

Hear the glad tidings and rejoice, O universe!

With the angels and shepherds glorify Him Who reveals Himself:

The eternal God, a little child.

R: Lord, have mercy. (12x)

Thou who at every season and every hour, in heaven and on earth, art worshipped and glorified, O Christ our God, long-suffering, merciful, and compassionate; who lovest the just and showest mercy upon the sinner; who callest all men to salvation through the promise of blessings to come; O Lord, in this hour receive our supplications and direct our lives according to Thy commandments. Sanctify our souls, hallow our bodies, correct our thoughts, cleanse our minds; deliver us from all tribulations, evil and distress. Surround us with Thy holy angels, that guided and guarded by their host, we may attain to the unity of the faith and to the knowledge of Thy unapproachable glory, for Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of Ages. Amen.

More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim; without defilement you gave birth to God the Word; true Theotokos, we magnify you.

In the name of the Lord, Father, bless.

P: God be bountiful unto us, and bless us and show us the light of His countenance, and be merciful unto us.

R: Amen.

O Christ, the True Light Who enlightenest and sanctifiest every man who comes into the world, let the light of Thy countenance shine upon us, that in it we may behold the unapproachable light, and guide our footsteps aright to the keeping of Thy commandments, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother, and of all Thy saints. Amen.

The Third Hour

R: Come, let us worship God, our King!

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and our God!

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God!

As the Psalms are chanted, the priest censes around the Gospel, after which he censes the altar, the sanctuary, the iconostas, and the people, concluding by censing before the Gospel.

Psalm 67

1 May God be gracious to us and bless us

and make his face to shine upon us, [Selah]

2 that thy way may be known upon earth,

thy saving power among all nations.

3 Let the peoples praise thee, O God;

let all the peoples praise thee!

4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,

for thou dost judge the peoples with equity

and guide the nations upon earth. [Selah]

5 Let the peoples praise thee, O God;

let all the peoples praise thee!

6 The earth has yielded its increase;

God, our God, has blessed us.

7 God has blessed us;

let all the ends of the earth fear him!

Psalm 87

1 On the holy mount stands the city he founded;

2 the LORD loves the gates of Zion

more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.

3 Glorious things are spoken of you,

O city of God. [Selah]

4 Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon;

behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Ethiopia -

"This one was born there," they say.

5 And of Zion it shall be said,

"This one and that one were born in her";

for the Most High himself will establish her.

6 The LORD records as he registers the peoples,

"This one was born there." [Selah]

7 Singers and dancers alike say,

"All my springs are in you."

1 Have mercy on me, O God,

according to thy steadfast love;

according to thy abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,

and cleanse me from my sin!

3 For I know my transgressions,

and my sin is ever before me.

4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned,

and done that which is evil in thy sight,

so that thou art justified in thy sentence

and blameless in thy judgment.

5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,

and in sin did my mother conceive me.

6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward being;

therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;

wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8 Fill me with joy and gladness;

let the bones which thou hast broken rejoice.

9 Hide thy face from my sins,

and blot out all my iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and put a new and right spirit within me.

11 Cast me not away from thy presence,

and take not thy holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of thy salvation,

and uphold me with a willing spirit.

13 Then I will teach transgressors thy ways,

and sinners will return to thee.

14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,

thou God of my salvation,

and my tongue will sing aloud of thy deliverance.

15 O Lord, open thou my lips,

and my mouth shall show forth thy praise.

16 For thou hast no delight in sacrifice;

were I to give a burnt offering, thou wouldst not be pleased.

17 The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;

a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

18 Do good to Zion in thy good pleasure;

rebuild the walls of Jerusalem,

19 then wilt thou delight in right sacrifices,

in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;

then bulls will be offered on thy altar.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O God! (3x)

Lord, have mercy. (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

R: Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O Theotokos, you are the true vine laden with the fruit of life. We pray to you, O Lady, intercede together with the Apostles and all the saints, that mercy may be granted to our souls.

Tone 8

He is our God:

There is no other to compare with Him.

Born of a virgin, He comes to live with men.

The only-begotten Son appears as a mortal man.

He rests in a lowly manger.

The Lord of Glory is wrapped in swaddling clothes.

A star leads the wise men to worship Him,

And with them we sing:

O Holy Trinity, save our souls!

Vs: God shall come from Teman and the Holy One from the dark and shady mountain.

Tone 8

Before Thy birth, O Lord,

The hosts of angels already perceived the mystery.

They were struck with wonder and trembled,

For Thou Who did adorn the heavens with star

Are now well-pleased to be born as a babe.

Thou hold the ends of the earth in Thy hands,

But now Thou are laid in a manger of dumb beasts.

Yet all these things fulfilled Thy saving plan,

By which Thy compassion was revealed to us.

O Christ of great mercy, glory to Thee!

Vs: O Lord, I have heard what Thou have done, and am filled with awe.

Before Thy birth...

Vs: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Tone 3

Tell us, O Joseph:

Why do you bring a maiden great with child to Bethlehem?

"I have searched the prophets," he said.

"I have been instructed by an angel.

I am convinced that Mary will give birth to God,

In a manner beyond understanding.

Wise men from the East will come to worship Him,

Offering precious gifts in adoration."

O Lord, incarnate for us, glory to Thee!

Vs: Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Tell us, O Joseph:

Why do you bring a maiden great with child to Bethlehem?

"I have searched the prophets," he said.

R: The Prokeimenon of the Prophecy in the Fourth Tone.

For unto us a child is born.

Unto us a son is given. (Isaiah 9:6)

Vs: And the government shall be upon His shoulder.

D: Wisdom!

R: The reading from the Prophet Baruch. (Baruch 3:35-4:4)

P: Let us attend.

R: He is our God; there is no other to compare with Him. He discovered the entire path leading to understanding, and gave wisdom to Jacob His servant, and to Israel His beloved. Afterwards, Wisdom was seen on earth and He lived with men. Wisdom is the book of the commandments of God, the law that will endure forever. All who hold fast to it will live, but those who forsake it will die. Return, O Jacob, and take hold of it; walk in the presence of its brightness, that you may be illuminated. Do not surrender your honor to another people, or your dignity to a strange nation. How happy we are, O people of Israel; we have the advantage of knowing what is pleasing to God.

The Epistle and Gospel follow immediately. The priest proclaims the Gospel from the center of the church. The Gospel is not preceded by censing.

D: Wisdom!

R: The Reading from the Epistle of St Paul the Apostle to the Galatians. (Galatians 3:23-29)

D: Let us attend!

R: Brethren, 23 Now before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. 24 So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.

D: And that we may be made worthy to listen to the Holy Gospel, let us pray to the Lord God.

Pp: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee.

P: 1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. 2 This was the first enrollment, when Quirin'i-us was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. 7 And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 8 And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 10 And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; 11 for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!"

15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." 16 And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; 18 and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

After the Gospel, the reader continues:

R: Blessed be the Lord God, blessed be the Lord from day to day, and may the God of our salvation prosper us, for He is our God, the God of salvation.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us! (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

Sanctify our souls, hallow our bodies, correct our thoughts, cleanse our minds; deliver us from all tribulations, evil, and distress. Surround us with Thy holy angels, that guided and guarded by their host we may attain to the unity of the faith, and to the knowledge of Thine unapproachable glory, for Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

R: Amen.

O God the Master, Father Almighty, O Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son, and Thou, O Holy Spirit, one Godhead, one Power, have mercy upon me, a sinner, and according to Thy divine judgments save us, Thine unworthy servant, for Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

Psalm 72

1 Give the king thy justice, O God,

and thy righteousness to the royal son!

2 May he judge thy people with righteousness,

and thy poor with justice!

3 Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people,

and the hills, in righteousness!

4 May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,

give deliverance to the needy,

and crush the oppressor!

5 May he live while the sun endures,

and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!

6 May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass,

like showers that water the earth!

7 In his days may righteousness flourish,

and peace abound, till the moon be no more!

8 May he have dominion from sea to sea,

and from the River to the ends of the earth!

9 May his foes bow down before him,

and his enemies lick the dust!

10 May the kings of Tarshish and of the isles

render him tribute,

may the kings of Sheba and Seba

bring gifts!

11 May all kings fall down before him,

all nations serve him!

12 For he delivers the needy when he calls,

the poor and him who has no helper.

13 He has pity on the weak and the needy,

and saves the lives of the needy.

14 From oppression and violence he redeems their life;

and precious is their blood in his sight.

15 Long may he live,

may gold of Sheba be given to him!

May prayer be made for him continually,

and blessings invoked for him all the day!

16 May there be abundance of grain in the land;

on the tops of the mountains may it wave;

may its fruit be like Lebanon;

and may men blossom forth from the cities

like the grass of the field!

17 May his name endure for ever,

his fame continue as long as the sun!

May men bless themselves by him,

all nations call him blessed!

18 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,

who alone does wondrous things.

19 Blessed be his glorious name for ever;

may his glory fill the whole earth!

Amen and Amen!

20 The prayers of David, the son of Jesse, are ended.

Psalm 132

1 Remember, O LORD, in David's favor,

all the hardships he endured;

2 how he swore to the LORD

and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob,

3 "I will not enter my house

or get into my bed;

4 I will not give sleep to my eyes

or slumber to my eyelids,

5 until I find a place for the LORD,

a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob."

6 Lo, we heard of it in Eph'rathah,

we found it in the fields of Ja'ar.

7 "Let us go to his dwelling place;

let us worship at his footstool!"

8 Arise, O LORD, and go to thy resting place,

thou and the ark of thy might.

9 Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness,

and let thy saints shout for joy.

10 For thy servant David's sake

do not turn away the face of thy anointed one.

11 The LORD swore to David a sure oath

from which he will not turn back:

"One of the sons of your body

I will set on your throne.

12 If your sons keep my covenant

and my testimonies which I shall teach them,

their sons also for ever

shall sit upon your throne."

13 For the LORD has chosen Zion;

he has desired it for his habitation:

14 "This is my resting place for ever;

here I will dwell, for I have desired it.

15 I will abundantly bless her provisions;

I will satisfy her poor with bread.

16 Her priests I will clothe with salvation,

and her saints will shout for joy.

17 There I will make a horn to sprout for David;

I have prepared a lamp for my anointed.

18 His enemies I will clothe with shame,

but upon himself his crown will shed its luster."

Psalm 91

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High,

who abides in the shadow of the Almighty,

2 will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress;

my God, in whom I trust."

3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler

and from the deadly pestilence;

4 he will cover you with his pinions,

and under his wings you will find refuge;

his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.

5 You will not fear the terror of the night,

nor the arrow that flies by day,

6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,

nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,

ten thousand at your right hand;

but it will not come near you.

8 You will only look with your eyes

and see the recompense of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the LORD your refuge,

the Most High your habitation,

10 no evil shall befall you,

no scourge come near your tent.

11 For he will give his angels charge of you

to guard you in all your ways.

12 On their hands they will bear you up,

lest you dash your foot against a stone.

13 You will tread on the lion and the adder,

the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot.

14 Because he cleaves to me in love, I will deliver him;

I will protect him, because he knows my name.

15 When he calls to me, I will answer him;

I will be with him in trouble,

I will rescue him and honor him.

16 With long life I will satisfy him,

and show him my salvation.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

When December 25 falls on Sunday or Monday, the Troparion may be found on page 6.

R: Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

We have no boldness because of the multitude of our sins, but entreat Him Who was born of you, O Virgin Theotokos, for the prayer of a mother has great power to win the favor of the Master. Do not despise the supplications of sinners, O all-pure one, for merciful and strong to save is He Who willed to suffer for us.

Tone 4

Come, O God-inspired faithful,

Arise and behold the descent of God from on high!

He manifests Himself to us in Bethlehem!

Let us cleanse our minds, and offer Him a life of virtue instead of myrrh.

Let us prepare with faith to celebrate His nativity,

Storing up spiritual treasure and crying:

Glory in the highest to God in trinity!

His good pleasure is now revealed to men:

As the lover of man He sets Adam free from the ancestral curse.

Vs: God shall come from Teman and the Holy One form the dark and shady mountain.

Tone 4

Listen, O heaven! Give ear, O earth!

Let the foundations of the earth be shaken!

Let trembling seize the regions beneath the earth,

For our God and Creator has clothed Himself in created flesh;

He fashioned all creation, yet reveals Himself in the womb of her that He formed.

O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!

How incomprehensible are His judgments;

And how unsearchable His ways!

Vs: O Lord, I have heard what Thou have done, and am filled with awe.

Listen, O heaven...

Vs: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Tone 5

Come, O Christ-bearing people!

Let us behold wonders that will amaze every mind.

As we worship in faith, let us sing praises.

Today a maiden great with child goes up to Bethlehem.

There she will give birth to the Lord.

Choirs of angels go before her.

Joseph, her husband, cried out when he saw these things,

"What is this strange mystery in you, O virgin?

How will you bear a child,

O calif who never bore the yoke of man?"

Vs: Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Come, O Christ-bearing people!...

R: In those days, the Lord spoke again unto Ahaz, king of Judah, saying: Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the heavens. But Ahaz answered: "I will not ask; I will not tempt the Lord." And Isaiah said: "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel, which means God is with us. He shall eat milk and honey, even before He knows to refuse evil, and to choose good. For behold the child knows how to refuse evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted." And the Lord said to me: "Take a large tablet, and write on it in letters for everyone to see: 'The spoil speeds; the plunder hastens.'" And I got reliable witnesses: Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the Son of Jeberechiah, to testify for me. And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, "Call his name 'the spoil speeds; the plunder hastens,' for before the child knows how to cry 'My father' or 'My mother,' the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria. God is with us. Understand this, O nations, and submit yourselves. Hear this you very ends of the earth; submit yourselves, you mighty ones. Even if your strength returns, you shall be overthrown once more. Take counsel together, if you wish, but it will come to nothing. Make your plans, if you wish, but they will never stand, even among yourselves, for God is with us.

But thou art the same, and thy years will never end. 13 But to what angel has he ever said, "Sit at my right hand, till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet"? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?

1 Therefore we must pay the closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? D: 1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, 2 "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him." 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: 6 'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'" 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; 8 and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." 9 When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; 11 and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;

all his precepts are trustworthy,

8 they are established for ever and ever,

9 He sent redemption to his people;

Holy and terrible is his name!

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;

5 For thou, O Lord, art good and forgiving,

abounding in steadfast love to all who call on thee.

6 Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer;

hearken to my cry of supplication.

7 In the day of my trouble I call on thee,

for thou dost answer me.

8 There is none like thee among the gods, O Lord,

nor are there any works like thine.

9 All the nations thou hast made shall come

and bow down before thee, O Lord,

and shall glorify thy name.

10 For thou art great and doest wondrous things,

thou alone art God.

11 Teach me thy way, O LORD,

that I may walk in thy truth;

unite my heart to fear thy name.

12 I give thanks to thee, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,

and I will glorify thy name for ever.

13 For great is thy steadfast love toward me;

thou hast delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

14 O God, insolent men have risen up against me;

a band of ruthless men seek my life,

and they do not set thee before them.

15 But thou, O Lord, art a God merciful and gracious,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

16 Turn to me and take pity on me;

give thy strength to thy servant,

This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt have I called my son." 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was in a furious rage, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more."

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, 20 "Rise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead." 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene."

Kontakion

Tone 3

Today the virgin comes to the cave

Where she will give birth to the Eternal Word.

Hear the glad tidings and rejoice, O universe!

With the angels and shepherds glorify Him Who reveals Himself:

The eternal God, a little child.

R: Lord, have mercy. (12x)

Thou Who at every season and every hour, in heaven and on earth, art worshiped and glorified, O Christ our God, long-suffering, merciful, and compassionate; Who lovest the just and showest mercy upon the sinner; Who callest all men to salvation through the promise of blessings to come: O Lord, in this hour receive our supplications and direct our lives according to Thy commandments. Sanctify our souls, hallow our bodies, correct our thoughts, cleanse our minds; deliver us from all tribulations, evil, and distress. Surround us with Thy holy angels, that guided and guarded by their host, we may attain to the unity of the faith and to the knowledge of Thy unapproachable glory, for Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

More honorable than the cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim; without defilement you gave birth to God the Word; true Theotokos, we magnify you.

In the name of the Lord, Father, bless.

P: God be bountiful unto us, and bless us, and show us the light of His countenance, and be merciful unto us.

R: Amen.

O Master and Lord, Jesus Christ our God, Who art long-suffering towards our sins and hast brought us even unto this present hour, in which, hanging upon the life-giving cross, Thou hast opened unto the good thief the way into paradise, and destroyed death by death; be merciful to us, Thy humble and sinful and unworthy servants. For we have sinned and transgressed, and we are not worthy to lift up our eyes and look at the height of heaven, since we have forsaken the path of Thy righteousness and have walked according to the desires of our own hearts. But we pray Thee of Thy boundless goodness, spare us, O Lord, according to the abundance of Thy mercy, and save us for Thy holy Name's sake, for our days are consumed in vanity. Deliver us from the hand of the adversary, forgive us our sins, and kill the passion of the flesh, that putting off the old man, we may be clothed with the new, and may live for Thee, our Master and Protector; and that so, following Thine ordinances, we may attain to eternal rest, in the place where the joyful dwell.

For Thou, O Christ our God, art indeed the true joy and gladness of those that love Thee, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, Who is without beginning, and Thy most holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

P: Glory to Thee, O Christ, our God and our Hope, glory to Thee.

Pp: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Father, bless.

P: May He Who was born in a cavern for our salvation, Christ, our true God, thru the prayers of His Most Pure Mother ( the patron of the church and any other saints as customary ) and of all the Saints, have mercy on us and save us, in that He is gracious and loves mankind.

Pp: Amen.

The Typical Psalms

Psalm 103

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul;

and all that is within me, bless his holy name!

2 Bless the LORD, O my soul,

and forget not all his benefits,

3 who forgives all your iniquity,

who heals all your diseases,

4 who redeems your life from the Pit,

who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,

5 who satisfies you with good as long as you live

so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

6 The LORD works vindication

and justice for all who are oppressed.

7 He made known his ways to Moses,

his acts to the people of Israel.

8 The LORD is merciful and gracious,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

9 He will not always chide,

nor will he keep his anger for ever.

10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,

nor requite us according to our iniquities.

11 For as the heavens are high above the earth,

so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;

12 as far as the east is from the west,

so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

13 As a father pities his children,

so the LORD pities those who fear him.

14 For he knows our frame;

he remembers that we are dust.

15 As for man, his days are like grass;

he flourishes like a flower of the field;

16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,

and its place knows it no more.

17 But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting

upon those who fear him,

and his righteousness to children's children,

18 to those who keep his covenant

and remember to do his commandments.

19 The LORD has established his throne in the heavens,

and his kingdom rules over all.

20 Bless the LORD, O you his angels,

you mighty ones who do his word,

hearkening to the voice of his word!

21 Bless the LORD, all his hosts,

his ministers that do his will!

22 Bless the LORD, all his works,

in all places of his dominion.

Bless the LORD, O my soul!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

PSALM 146

1 Praise the LORD!

Praise the LORD, O my soul!

2 I will praise the LORD as long as I live;

I will sing praises to my God while I have being.

3 Put not your trust in princes,

in a son of man, in whom there is no help.

4 When his breath departs he returns to his earth;

on that very day his plans perish.

5 Happy is he whose help is the God of Jacob,

whose hope is in the LORD his God,

6 who made heaven and earth,

the sea, and all that is in them;

who keeps faith for ever;

7 who executes justice for the oppressed;

who gives food to the hungry.

The LORD sets the prisoners free;

8 the LORD opens the eyes of the blind.

The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down;

the LORD loves the righteous.

9 The LORD watches over the sojourners,

he upholds the widow and the fatherless;

but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

10 The LORD will reign for ever,

thy God, O Zion, to all generations.

Praise the LORD!

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Only begotten Son and immortal Word of God,

Who for our salvation didst will to be incarnate of the holy Theotokos and ever Virgin Mary,

Who without change didst become man and wast crucified,

Who art one of the holy Trinity, glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit:

O Christ our God, trampling down death by death, save us!

R: In Thy kingdom remember us, O Lord, when Thou come in Thy kingdom.

Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Remember us, O Lord, when Thou come in Thy kingdom. (Reverence)

Remember us, O Master, when Thou come in Thy kingdom. (Reverence)

Remember us, O Holy One, when Thou come in Thy kingdom. (Reverence)

The heavenly choir hymn Thee and cry, Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts; heaven and earth are full of Thy glory.

Come unto Him and be enlightened, and your faces shall not be ashamed.

The heavenly choir hymn Thee and cry, Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts; heaven and earth are full of Thy glory.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

The choir of holy angels and archangels, with all the powers of heaven sing Thy praises and cry, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Host; heaven and earth are full of Thy glory.

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light; true God of true God; begotten not made; of one essence with the Father; by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man. And He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead. Whose Kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. In one holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Loose, remit, and pardon, O God, our sins both voluntary and involuntary, in thought, word, or deed, in knowledge or in ignorance, committed by day or by night, of the mind or of the intention: forgive them all, for Thou are good and love mankind.

Pp: Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (12 times)

O all-holy Trinity, Mighty one in essence, kingdom undivided, Origin of all good things, be graciously inclined also to me, a sinner. Establish me; give understanding unto my heart, and purge away all my vileness. Enlighten my mind, that I may glorify, sing praises, and adore Thee, and say: Thou only are holy, Thou only are the Lord, Jesus Christ, in the glory of the Father. Amen.

Pp: Amen.

Come, let us worship God our King.

The priest, accompanied by the deacon, censes the whole church and then after censing the holy Table, takes off the phelonion and comes out before the Royal Doors and reads the Lamp-Lighting Prayers (or Prayers of Light, Appendix A, page 225) while the Introductory Psalm is read or sung.

Psalm 104

Praise of God's Creation

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul!

O LORD my God, thou art very great!

Thou art clothed with honor and majesty,

2 who coverest thyself with light as with a garment,

who hast stretched out the heavens like a tent,

3 who hast laid the beams of thy chambers on the waters,

who makest the clouds thy chariot,

who ridest on the wings of the wind,

4 who makest the winds thy messengers,

fire and flame thy ministers.

5 Thou didst set the earth on its foundations,

so that it should never be shaken.

6 Thou didst cover it with the deep as with a garment;

the waters stood above the mountains.

7 At thy rebuke they fled;

at the sound of thy thunder they took to flight.

8 The mountains rose, the valleys sank down

to the place which thou didst appoint for them.

9 Thou didst set a bound which they should not pass,

so that they might not again cover the earth.

10 Thou makest springs gush forth in the valleys;

they flow between the hills,

11 they give drink to every beast of the field;

the wild asses quench their thirst.

12 By them the birds of the air have their habitation;

they sing among the branches.

13 From thy lofty abode thou waterest the mountains;

the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy work.

14 Thou dost cause the grass to grow for the cattle,

and plants for man to cultivate,

that he may bring forth food from the earth,

15 and wine to gladden the heart of man,

oil to make his face shine,

and bread to strengthen man's heart.

16 The trees of the LORD are watered abundantly,

the cedars of Lebanon which he planted.

17 In them the birds build their nests;

the stork has her home in the fir trees.

18 The high mountains are for the wild goats;

the rocks are a refuge for the badgers.

19 Thou hast made the moon to mark the seasons;

the sun knows its time for setting.

20 Thou makest darkness, and it is night,

when all the beasts of the forest creep forth.

21 The young lions roar for their prey,

seeking their food from God.

22 When the sun rises, they get them away

and lie down in their dens.

23 Man goes forth to his work

and to his labor until the evening.

24 O LORD, how manifold are thy works!

In wisdom hast thou made them all;

the earth is full of thy creatures.

25 Yonder is the sea, great and wide,

which teems with things innumerable,

living things both small and great.

26 There go the ships,

and Leviathan which thou didst form to sport in it.

27 These all look to thee,

to give them their food in due season.

28 When thou givest to them, they gather it up;

when thou openest thy hand, they are filled with good things.

29 When thou hidest thy face, they are dismayed;

when thou takest away their breath, they die

and return to their dust.

30 When thou sendest forth thy Spirit, they are created;

and thou renewest the face of the ground.

31 May the glory of the LORD endure for ever,

may the LORD rejoice in his works,

32 who looks on the earth and it trembles,

who touches the mountains and they smoke!

33 I will sing to the LORD as long as I live;

I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

34 May my meditation be pleasing to him,

for I rejoice in the LORD.

35 Let sinners be consumed from the earth,

and let the wicked be no more!

Bless the LORD, O my soul!

Praise the LORD!

The Lamp Lighting Psalms

The Lamp Lighting Psalms are read as if they constitute a single psalm. The priest makes the usual incensing, but without a procession: walking around the holy Table, he incenses its four corners, then goes out through the north door and incenses the choirs, the icons, and the people according to custom. Returning to the Royal Doors, he censes once again those in the sanctuary. Finally, he returns the censer to the server and returns to the holy Table. If a deacon is serving, the deacon does the incensing.

Tone 4

Lord, I call upon Thee; hear me! Hear me, O Lord! Lord, I call upon Thee; hear me! Receive the voice of my prayer when I call upon Thee. Hear me, O Lord.

Let my prayer arise in Thy sight as incense, and let the lifting up of my hands be an evening sacrifice. Hear me, O Lord.

3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD,

keep watch over the door of my lips!

4 Incline not my heart to any evil,

to busy myself with wicked deeds

in company with men who work iniquity;

and let me not eat of their dainties!

5 Let a good man strike or rebuke me in kindness,

but let the oil of the wicked never anoint my head;

for my prayer is continually against their wicked deeds.

6 When they are given over to those who shall condemn them,

then they shall learn that the word of the LORD is true.

7 As a rock which one cleaves and shatters on the land,

so shall their bones be strewn at the mouth of Sheol.

8 But my eyes are toward thee, O LORD God;

in thee I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless!

9 Keep me from the trap which they have laid for me,

and from the snares of evildoers!

10 Let the wicked together fall into their own nets,

while I escape.

1 I cry with my voice to the LORD,

with my voice I make supplication to the LORD,

2 I pour out my complaint before him,

I tell my trouble before him.

3 When my spirit is faint,

thou knowest my way!

In the path where I walk

they have hidden a trap for me.

4 I look to the right and watch,

but there is none who takes notice of me;

no refuge remains to me,

no man cares for me.

5 I cry to thee, O LORD;

I say, Thou art my refuge,

my portion in the land of the living.

6 Give heed to my cry;

for I am brought very low!

Deliver me from my persecutors;

for they are too strong for me!

7 Bring me out of prison,

that I may give thanks to thy name!

R: If Thou, O Lord, shouldst mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with Thee.

Pp: Come, let us greatly rejoice in the Lord,

as we sing of this present mystery.

The wall which divided God form man has been destroyed.

The flaming sword withdraws from Eden's gate;

The cherubim withdraw from the Tree of Life,

and I, who had been cast out through my disobedience,

now feast on the delights of paradise:

For today the father's perfect image,

marked with the stamp of His eternity,

has taken the form of a servant.

Without undergoing change He is born from an unwedded mother;

He was true God, and He remains the same,

but through His love for mankind,

He has become what He never was: true man!

Come, O faithful, let us cry to Him:

O God, born of a virgin, have mercy on us.

R: For Thy name's sake I wait for Thee, O Lord; my soul has waited for Thy word; my soul has hoped on the Lord.

Pp: Come, let us greatly rejoice,...

R: From the morning watch until night, from the morning watch, let Israel hope on the Lord.

Pp: When the Lord Jesus was born of the holy virgin,

the whole unvierse was filled with light.

The shepherds watched in the fields.

The wise men worshipped and the angels sang.

But Herod was troubled,

for God has appeared in the flesh.

He is the Savior of our souls!

R: For with the Lord there is mercy and with Him is plenteous redemption and He will deliver Israel from all his iniquities.

Pp: When the Lord Jesus...

R: Praise the Lord, all nations! Praise Him all people.

Pp: Thy Kingdom endures forever, O Christ our God.

Thy rule is from age to age.

Made flesh by the Holy Spirit,

made man of the ever-virgin Mary,

Thou have filled all creation with joy.

The light of Thy coming has shone on us!

Every living creature praises Thee,

the Image of the Father's glory.

Light of Light, the radiance of the Father,

The same yesterday, today, and forever,

Thou hast shone forth from the virgin.

O God, have mercy on us!

R: For His mercy is confirmed on us, and the truth of the Lord endures forever.

Pp: What shall we offer Thee, O Christ,

Who for our sakes have appeared on earth as man?

Every creature made by Thee offers Thee thanks:

The angels offer a hymn; the heavens, a star;

the wise men, gifts; the shepherds, their wonder;

the earth, its cave; the wilderness, a manger.

And we offer Thee a virgin mother!

O Pre-eternal God, have mercy on us!

R: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Pp: When Augustus ruled alone upon the earth,

the many kingdoms of men came to an end,

and when Thou were made man of the pure virgin,

the many gods of idolatry were destroyed.

The cities of the world passed under one single rule,

and the nations came to believe in one sovereign Godhead.

The peoples were enrolled by the decree of Caesar,

and we the faithfulw ere enrolled in the name of the Godhead,

when Thou, our God, were made man.

Great is Thy mercy, O Lord! Glory to Thee!

The Entrance

The Royal Doors are now opened, and the priest and servers make the Entrance as the people sings the Dogmatikon (above). The deacon carries the Gospel. The deacon, bowing slightly and holding the orarion with the first three fingers of his right hand, says to the priest:

D: Let us pray to the Lord.

The priest, bowing also, says the Prayer of the Entrance:

P: In the evening, and in the morning, and at noonday, we praise Thee, we bless Thee, we give thanks unto Thee, and we pray Thee, O Master of all, O Lord Who love man, direct our prayer before Thee as incense, and incline not our hearts to words or thoughts of evil, but deliver us from all that seek after our souls. For upon Thee, O Lord, O Lord, are our eyes, and in Thee have we put our hope. Put us not to shame, O our God. For to Thee belong all glory, honor, and worship, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Then the deacon, holding the orarion with three fingers of the right hand and pointing to the East (the Altar) says to the priest in a low voice:

D: Bless, Master, the holy entrance.

Then the priest blessed toward the East, saying:

P: Blessed is the entrance of Thy Saints, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

D: Amen.

And standing in the holy doors, tracing the sign of the Cross with the censer, he exclaims:

D: Wisdom! Attend!

Pp: O Gladsome Light of the holy Glory of the immortal Father, heavenly, holy, blessed Jesus Christ! Now that we have come to the setting of the sun and behold the light of evening, we praise God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. For meet it is at all times to worship Thee with voices of praise, O Son of God and Giver of Life. Therefore all the world doth glorify Thee!

While this hymn is being sung, the deacon censes the Altar, the priest, the icons, and the whole congregation. The deacon and the priest then go to the high place.

Lessons

The ordinary Vespers does not have any lessons. They are called "Paramii." They remind the people of some Christian mystery or explain the meaning of the feast. During the lessons the priest stands or sits behind the Altar and the Royal Doors are closed.

Before each lesson:

D: Wisdom!

The reader announces the title of the reading.

R: The Reading from Genesis (1:1-13)

D: Let us attend!

The lesson is now read.

R: 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.

3 And God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

6 And God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." 7 And God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

9 And God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth." And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.

D: Wisdom!

The reader announces the title of the reading.

R: The Reading from Numbers (24:2-3, 5-9, 17-18)

D: Let us attend!

The lesson is now read.

R: The Spirit of God came upon Balaam, and he took up his parable, and said: "How fair are your tents, O Jacob, your encampments, O Israel! Like valleys that stretch afar, like gardens beside a river, like tents which God has pitched, like cedar trees beside the waters. There shall come forth a man form his seed, and he shall rule all the nations, and his kingdom shall be exalted. God led him forth from Egypt; he has as it were the glory of the wild ox; he shall consume the nations of his enemies, and shall break their bones in pieces, and pierce them through with his arrows. He lay down, he couched as a lion, and as a young lion; who shall raise him up? Blessed by everyone who blesses you, and cursed be everyone who curses you. A star will rise out of Jacob, and a man shall rise up from Israel; he will crush the princes of Moab, and break down all the sons of Seth. And Edom will be his inheritance, and Esau his enemy shall be his inheritance, and Israel will do valiantly."

D: Let us attend!

The lesson is now read.

R: On that day, says the Lord, I will gather her who was afflicted, and I will take back her who had been cast out, and those whom I have rejected. And I will make her who was afflicted into a remnant, and her whom I have rejected into a mighty nation, and the Lord shall reign over them on Mount Sion from henceforth and forevermore. But you, Bethlehem, house of Ephratha, are little among the thousands of Judah, yet from you shall come forth to me Him who is to be ruler in Israel, and His going forth is from the beginning, from the days of eternity.

Then the Royal Doors are opened and we stand and sing:

Tone 6

In the secrecy of a cave Thou were born,

But heaven spoke openly through a star,

Revealing Thee to all, O Savior.

The star led wise men to worship Thee;

As on them, O Lord, have mercy on us!

Psalm 87

His foundations are on the holy mountains. The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

The star led wise men to worship Thee;

As on them, O Lord, have mercy on us!

Glorious things are said of you, O city of God. I will mention Rahab and Babylon to those who know me.

The star led wise men to worship Thee;

As on them, O Lord, have mercy on us!

Behold, Philistines and the people of Tyre and Ethiopia, these were born there.

The star led wise men to worship Thee;

As on them, O Lord, have mercy on us!

A man will say, "Zion is my mother," and "Such a man was born in her," and "The Most High Himself has founded her."

The star led wise men to worship Thee;

As on them, O Lord, have mercy on us!

The Lord will record in His register of the peoples the princes who were born in her. How joyful are all those whose whom is in you!

The star led wise men to worship Thee;

As on them, O Lord, have mercy on us!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

In the secrecy of a cave Thou were born,

But heaven spoke openly through a star,

Revealing Thee to all, O Savior.

The star led wise men to worship Thee;

As on them, O Lord, have mercy on us!

D: Let us attend!

The lesson is now read.

R: 1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. 2 And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. 3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; 4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the girdle of his waist, and faithfulness the girdle of his loins. 6 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. 7 The cow and the bear shall feed; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 The sucking child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den. 9 They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. 10 In that day the root of Jesse shall stand as an ensign to the peoples; him shall the nations seek, and his dwellings shall be glorious.

35 This is our God;

no other can be compared to him!

36 He found the whole way to knowledge,

and gave her to Jacob his servant

and to Israel whom he loved.

37 Afterward she appeared upon earth

and lived among men.

1 She is the book of the commandments of God,

and the law that endures for ever.

All who hold her fast will live,

and those who forsake her will die.

2 Turn, O Jacob, and take her;

walk toward the shining of her light.

3 Do not give your glory to another,

or your advantages to an alien people.

4 Happy are we, O Israel,

for we know what is pleasing to God.

R: The Reading from the Prophet Daniel (Daniel 2:31-36; 44-45)

D: Let us attend!

The lesson is now read.

R: Daniel said to Nebuchadnezzar: "Behold, in your vision you saw an image, O king; it was a great image. Its face stood before your face; it was of exceeding brightness, and its appearance was terrifying. The head of this mage was of fine gold, its hands and breast and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of brass, its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. This you saw, until a stone was cut, without human hands, from a mountain and it struck the image on the feet of iron and clay. Then the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, all together were broken in pieces once for all, and became like a chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away and no place could be found for them. But the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. This was the dream; now we will tell the king its interpretation: the God of heaven shall raise up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, and His kingdom shall not be abandoned to another people. It shall break to pieces and grind to powder all other kingdoms, but it shall stand forever. Just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that it broke to pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold. The great God has made known to the king what must happen hereafter. The dream is true, and the interpretation certain."

From a virgin Thou didst rise, O Christ,

Psalm 93

The LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty;

The Lord has clothed Himself with power, and has girded Himself with strength.

Thou have led the wise men to worship Thee;

With them we magnify Thee:

O Giver of Life, glory to Thee!

He has set the earth so firmly in place that it cannot be moved. Thy throne is prepared from of old; Thou are from everlasting.

Thou have led the wise men to worship Thee;

With them we magnify Thee:

O Giver of Life, glory to Thee!

The rivers lift up, O Lord, the rivers lift up their voices; the rivers lift up their waves at the sound of many waters.

Thou have led the wise men to worship Thee;

With them we magnify Thee:

O Giver of Life, glory to Thee!

Wonderful are the waves of the sea; wonderful is the Lord on high. Thy testimonies are very sure.

Thou have led the wise men to worship Thee;

With them we magnify Thee:

O Giver of Life, glory to Thee!

Holiness is due Thy house, O Lord, forever.

Thou have led the wise men to worship Thee;

With them we magnify Thee:

O Giver of Life, glory to Thee!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

D: Let us attend!

The lesson is now read.

2 The people who walked in darkness

have seen a great light;

those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,

on them has light shined.

3 Thou hast multiplied the nation,

thou hast increased its joy;

they rejoice before thee

as with joy at the harvest,

as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

4 For the yoke of his burden,

and the staff for his shoulder,

the rod of his oppressor,

thou hast broken as on the day of Mid'ian.

5 For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult

and every garment rolled in blood

will be burned as fuel for the fire.

6 For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given;

and the government will be upon his shoulder,

and his name will be called

"Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

7 Of the increase of his government and of peace

there will be no end,

upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom,

to establish it, and to uphold it

with justice and with righteousness

from this time forth and for evermore.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

R: The Reading from the Prophet Isaiah (7:10-16; 8:1-4, 8-10)

D: Let us attend!

The lesson is now read.

R: In those days, the Lord spoke again unto Ahaz, king of Judah, saying: "Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the heavens." But Ahaz answered: "I will not ask; I will not tempt the Lord." And Isaiah said: "Hear then, O house of David! For behold the child knows how to refuse evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted." And the Lord said to me: "Take a large tablet, and write on it in letters for everyone to see: `The spoil speeds; the plunder hastens." And I got reliable witnesses: Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the Son of Jeberechiah, to testify for me.

Divine Liturgy

D: Again and again in peace let us pray to the Lord.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: Help us, save us, have mercy on us, raise us up, and keep us, O God, by Thy grace.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: Commemorating our most holy, most pure, most blessed and glorious Lady Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary with all the saints, let us commend ourselves and each other, and all our life unto Christ our God.

Pp: To Thee, O Lord.

P: O holy God, Who rest in the saints; Who are hymned by the Seraphim with the thrice-holy cry, and glorified by the Cherubim, and worshipped by every heavenly power; Who out of nothing have brought all things into being; Who hae created man after Thine own image and likeness, and have adorned him with Thine every gift; Who give to him who asks wisdom and understanding; Who do not despise the sinner, but instead have appointed repentance unto salvation; Who have vouchsafed to us, Thy humble and unworthy servants, even at this hour to stand before the glory of Thy holy altar, and to offer worship and praise which are due unto Thee. Thyself, O Master, accept even from the mouths of us sinners the thrice-holy hymn, and visit us in Thy goodness. Forgive us every transdgression, both voluntary and involuntary. Sanctify our souls and bodies, and enable us to serve Thee in holiness all the days of our life. Through the intercessions of the holy Theotokos and of all the saints who from the beginning of the world have been well-pleasing to Thee.

R: The reading of the Holy Epistle of Saint Paul the Apostles to the Hebrews. ( 1:1-12 )

D: Let us attend!

For to what angel did God ever say,

"Thou art my Son,

today I have begotten thee"?

Or again,

"I will be to him a father,

and he shall be to me a son"?

And again, when he brings the first-born into the world, he says,

"Let all God's angels worship him."

Of the angels he says,

"Who makes his angels winds,

and his servants flames of fire."

But of the Son he says,

"Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever,

the righteous scepter is the scepter of thy kingdom.

Thou hast loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;

therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee

with the oil of gladness beyond thy comrades."

And,

"Thou, Lord, didst found the earth in the beginning,

and the heavens are the work of thy hands;

they will perish, but thou remainest;

they will all grow old like a garment,

like a mantle thou wilt roll them up,

and they will be changed.

But thou art the same,

and thy years will never end."

After the reading of the Epistle the deacon censes the church. At the end:

P: Peace be to you, reader.

R: And to your spirit. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, in the Eighth Tone. ( Psalm 110 )

Pp: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The reader reads the verses and after each one the people answers:

R: The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand, until I make Thine enemies Thy footstool."

Pp: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

R: The Lord will send Thee the sceptre of power from Zion: "Rule in the midst of Thine enemies."

Pp: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

R: With Thee in dominion on the day of Thy birth, in the radiance of holiness; from the womb before the morning star have I begotten Thee.

Pp: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

P: Illumine our hearts, O Master, Who lovest mankind, with the pure light of Thy divine knowledge. Open the eyes of our mind to the understanding of Thy gospel teaching. Implant also in us the fear of Thy blessed commandments, that trampling down all carnal desires, we may enter upon a spiritual manner of living, both thinking and doing such things as are well pleasing to Thee. For Thou art the illumination of our souls and bodies, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, Who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, good, and life- creating Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

D: Bless, Master, him who proclaims the good tidings of the holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke.

P: May God, through the prayers of the holy, glorious, and all laudable Apostle and Evangelist Luke, enable you to proclaim the glad tidings with great power, to the fulfillment of the gospel of His beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

D: Amen.

D: Wisdom! Let us attend! Let us listen to the Holy Gospel.

P: Peace be unto all.

Pp: And to your spirit.

D: The reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke.

Pp: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee.

D: Let us attend!

The deacon now reads the Holy Gospel.

1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.

12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14 "Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!"

P: Peace be unto you who have proclaimed the Gospel.

Pp: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee.

D: Let us all say with all our soul and with all our mind, let us say.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: O Lord almighty, the God of our fathers, we pray Thee, hearken and have mercy.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: Have mercy on us, O God, according to Thy great goodness, we pray Thee, hearken and have mercy.

Pp: Lord, have mercy. (3x)

The antimension is partly unfolded by the priest; the upper portion is left unfolded.

D: Again we pray for our Metropolitan ___, for our Bishop ___, for priests, deacons, and all other clergy; and for all our brethren in Christ.

Pp: Lord, have mercy. (3x)

D: Again we pray for the President of our country, for all civil authorities, and for the armed forces.

Pp: Lord, have mercy. (3x)

D: Again we pray for the blessed and ever-memorable holy Orthodox patriarchs; and for the blessed and ever-memorable founders of this holy house; and for all our fathers and brethren, the Orthodox departed this life before us, who here and in all the world lie asleep in the Lord.

Pp: Lord, have mercy. (3x)

D: Again we pray for mercy, life, peace, health, salvation, and visitation for the servants of God ___, and for the pardon and remission of their sins.

Pp: Lord, have mercy. (3x)

D: Again we pray for those who bring offerings and do good works in this holy and all-venerable house, for those who labor and those who sing; and for all the people here present, who await Thy great and rich mercy.

P: Lord, have mercy. (3x)

P: O Lord our God, accept this fervent supplication of Thy servants, and have mercy on us according to the multitude of Thy mercy. Send down Thy bounties upon us and upon all Thy people, who await the rich mercy that comes from Thee.

P: For Thou art a merciful God, and lovest mankind, and unto Thee we ascribe glory: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

Pp: Amen.

D: Pray to the Lord, you catechumens.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: Let us, the faithful, pray for the catechumens, that the Lord may have mercy on them.

D: That He may teach them the word of truth.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: That He may reveal to them the gospel of righteousness.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: That He may unite them to His Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: Help them, save them, have mercy on them, and keep them, O God, by Thy grace.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: Bow your heads unto the Lord, you catechumens.

Pp: To Thee, O Lord.

P: O Lord our God, Who dwellest in the heavens and regardest all Thy works: Look down on Thy servants the catechumens, who have bowed their necks before Thee. Grant them a light yoke; make them precious members of Thy Holy Church; make them worthy of the laver of regeneration, the remission of sins, and the robe of incorruption--for the knowledge of Thee, our true God.

P: That with us they may glorify Thine all honorable and majestic name: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

Pp: Amen.

The antimension is now fully unfolded. The priest makes the Sign of the cross over it with the sponge, then kisses the sponge and lays it on the right side.

D: All catechumens, depart. Depart, catechumens. All that are catechumens, depart. Let no catechumens remain.

Let us, the faithful, again and again in peace pray unto the Lord.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us, O Lord, by Thy grace.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

P: Thou, O Lord, hast revealed to us this great mystery of salvation. Thou hast enabled us, Thy humble and unworthy servants, to be ministers at Thy holy altar. By the power of Thy Holy Spirit, enable us also to perform this service so that standing blamelessly before Thy holy glory, we may offer Thee a sacrifice of praise. For Thou alone accomplishest all things in all men. May our sacrifice be acceptable and well-pleasing in Thy sight, O Lord, for our sins and for the errors of all Thy people.

D: Wisdom!

P: For unto Thee are due all glory, honor and worship: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

Pp: Amen.

The four following petitions are recited only if a deacon is serving:

D: For the peace from above and for the salvation of our souls, let us pray to the Lord.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: For the peace of the whole world, for the welfare of the holy churches of God, and for the union of all, let us pray to the Lord.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: For this holy house and for those who enter with faith, reverence, and the fear of God, let us pray to the Lord.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: For our deliverance from all affliction, wrath, danger, and necessity, let us pray to the Lord.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

D: Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us, O Lord, by Thy grace.

Pp: Lord, have mercy.

P: O God, Who in mercy and compassion hast visited our lowliness; Who hast set us, Thy humble and sinful and unworthy servants, to serve at Thy holy altar before Thy holy glory. By the power of Thy Holy Spirit, strengthen us for this service; and grant speech to our lips so that we mayi call down the grace of Thy Holy Spirit upon the gifts that are about to be offered.

D: Wisdom!

P: That guarded always by Thy might, we may ascribe glory unto Thee: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

Pp: Amen.

The deacon returns to the sanctuary. He takes the censer, receives the priest's blessing, and censes the sanctuary, the iconostas, and the people. The people sing the Cherubic Hymn as the priest recites the prayer:

Pp: Let us who mystically represent the Cherubim, and who sing the thrice-holy hymn to the life- creating Trinity, now lay aside all earthly cares.

P: No one who is bound with the desires and pleasures of the flesh is worthy to approach or draw near or to serve Thee, O King of Glory; for to minister to Thee is great and awesome even to the heavenly powers. Nevertheless through Thine unspeakable and boundless love for mankind, Thou didst become man, yet without change or alteration, and as Ruler of All, didst become our High Priest, and didst commit to us the ministry of this liturgical and bloodless sacrifice. For Thou alone, O Lord our God, rules over those in heaven and on earth; Who art borne on the throne of the Seraphim and King of Israel; Who along art holy and dost rest in the saints. Therefore, I entreat Thee Who along art good and ready to listen: Look down on me, a sinner, Thine unprofitable servant; and cleanse my soul and heart from an evil conscience; and by the power of the Holy Spirit enable me, who am endowed with the grace of the priesthood, to stand before this, Thy holy table, and perform the sacred mystery of Thy holy and pure Body and precious Blood. For I draw near to Thee, and bowing my neck I implore Thee: Do not turn Thy face away from me, nor cast me out from among Thy children; but make me, Thy sinful and unworthy servant, worthy to offer gifts to Thee. For Thou art the Offerer and the Offered, the Receiver and the Received, O Christ our God, and to Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, Who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

When the priest finishes reciting the prayer and the deacon his censing, both stand before the altar and recites the Cherubic Hymn three times, bowing after each recitation.

P: Let us who mystically represent the Cherubim, and who sing the thrice-holy hymn to the life-creating Trinity, now lay aside all earthly cares.

D: That we may receive the King of All, Who comes invisibly upborne by the angelic hosts. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

They go before the Table of Preparation; the priest censes the Offering and say silently:

P: O God, cleanse me, a sinner, and have mercy on me.

D: Lift up, Master.

The priest puts the large veil on the deacon's left shoulder and gives him the paten, saying:

P: Lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the Lord.

The priest takes the chalice. Preceded by servers carrying candles, the celebrants make the Great Entrance.

During the Great Entrance, the priest prays aloud for the hierarchy and the faithful, according to the accepted formula of the local tradition. At the conclusion, he says:

P: May the Lord God remember all of you Orthodox Christians in His Kingdom always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

Pp: Amen.

That we may receive the King of All, Who comes invisibly upborne by the angelic hosts. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The celebrants enter the sanctuary. The priests places the Holy Gifts on the altar, saying:

P: The noble Joseph, when he had taken down Thy most pure Body from the tree, wrapped it in fine linen and anointed it with spices, and placed it in a new tomb.

In the tomb with the body and in hell with the soul, in paradise with the thief and on the throne with the Father and the Spirit, wast Thou, O boundless Christ, filling all things.

Bearing life and more fruitful than paradise, brighter than any royal chamber: Thy tomb, O Christ, is the fountain of our resurrection.

The priest takes the veils from the paten and chalice and places them on the altar, saying:

P: The noble Joseph,...

The priest takes the censer from the deacon and censes the Gifts, saying:

P: Do good to Zion in Thy good pleasure, rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem. Then wilt Thou delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Thy altar.

The priest returns the censer to the deacon; then he bows his head and asks the deacon:

P: Remember me, brother and fellow-minister.

D: May the Lord God remember your priesthood in His Kingdom.

P: Pray for me, my fellow-minister.

D: May the Holy Spirit descend on you, and the power of the Most High overshadow you.

P: May the Holy Spirit Himself minister together with us all the days of our life.

D: Remember me, holy Master.

P: May the Lord God remember your diaconate in His Kingdom.

D: Amen.
