Easter Wednesday Vespers

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us

Trisagion
Holy God, Holy and mighty, Holy immortal one,
Have mercy on us. (3x)
Latin. Sanctus Deus, Sanctus Fortis, Sanctus immortalis,
Miserere nobis.
Greek. Agios o theos, Agios ischyros, Agios athanatos,
Eleison imas.

Opening Verse
Jesus, because he remains for ever, can never lose his priesthood. It follows, then, that his power to save is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him. To suit us, the ideal high priest would have to be holy, innocent and uncontaminated, beyond the influence of sinners, and raised up above the heavens; one who would not need to offer sacrifices every day, as the other high priests do for their own sins and then for those of the people, because Jesus Christ our Lord has done this once and for all by offering himself. - Hebrews 7:24 - 27

Alleluia! Christ is Risen! The Lord is Risen Indeed! Alleluia!

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
the Lord is the strength of my life.
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
the Lord is the strength of my life.

The light shines in the darkness
and the darkness has not overcome it.
The Lord is the strength of my life.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
the Lord is the strength of my life.

Alleluia! Christ is Risen! The Lord is Risen Indeed! Alleluia!.

HYMN

Christ Jesus lay in death's strong bands
for our offenses given;
but now at God's right hand he stands
and brings us life from heaven;
Therefore let us joyful be,
and praise the Father thankfully
With songs of alleluia.
Alleluia.

How long and bitter was the strife
when life and death contended;
the victory remained with life,
the reign of death was ended;
stripped of power, no more it reigns,
an empty form alone remains;
death's sting is lost for ever!
Alleluia.

So let us keep this festival
To which our Lord invites us;
The Savior who is joy of all,
the sun that warms and lights us;
by his grace he shall impart
eternal sunshine to the heart;
the night of sin is ended.
Alleluia.

Psalms

1
Not to us, O LORD, not to us,
but to your Name give glory; *
     because of your love and because of your faithfulness.
2
Why should the heathen say, *
     "Where then is their God?"
3
Our God is in heaven; *
     whatever he wills to do he does.
4
Their idols are silver and gold, *
     the work of human hands.
5
They have mouths, but they cannot speak; *
     eyes have they, but they cannot see;
6
They have ears but they cannot hear; *
     noses, but they cannot smell;
7
They have hands, but they cannot feel;
feet, but they cannot walk; *
     they make no sound with their throat.
8
Those who make them are like them, *
     and so are all who put their trust in them.
9
O Israel, trust in the LORD; *
     he is their help and their shield.
10
O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD; *
     he is their help and their shield.
11
You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD; *
     he is their help and their shield.
12
The LORD has been mindful of us, and he will bless us; *
     he will bless the house of Israel;
     he will bless the house of Aaron;
13
He will bless those who fear the LORD, *
     both small and great together.
14
May the LORD increase you more and more, *
     you and your children after you.
15
May you be blessed by the LORD, *
     the maker of heaven and earth.
16
The heaven of heavens is the LORD'S, *
     but he entrusted the earth to its peoples.
17
The dead do not praise the LORD, *
     nor all those who go down into silence;
18
But we will bless the LORD, *
     from this time forth for evermore.
     Hallelujah!

First Reading

Exodus 12:40-51

The time that the Israelites had lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. At the end of four hundred and thirty years, on that very day, all the companies of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt. That was for the Lord a night of vigil, to bring them out of the land of Egypt. That same night is a vigil to be kept for the Lord by all the Israelites throughout their generations.

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: This is the ordinance for the passover: no foreigner shall eat of it, but any slave who has been purchased may eat of it after he has been circumcised; no bound or hired servant may eat of it. It shall be eaten in one house; you shall not take any of the animal outside the house, and you shall not break any of its bones. The whole congregation of Israel shall celebrate it. If an alien who resides with you wants to celebrate the passover to the Lord, all his males shall be circumcised; then he may draw near to celebrate it; he shall be regarded as a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person shall eat of it; there shall be one law for the native and for the alien who resides among you.

All the Israelites did just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. That very day the Lord brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt, company by company.

Canticle

Colossians 1:15-20

He is the image of the invisible God,
the first-born of all creation;
for in him all things were created,
In heaven and on earth,
visible and invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities
- all things were created through him and for him.
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
He is the head of the body, the church;
he is the beginning, the first-born from the dead,
that in everything he might be pre-eminent.
For in him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily,
and through him to reconcile to himself all things,
whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Second Reading

1 Corinthians 15:29-41

Otherwise, what will those people do who receive baptism on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?

And why are we putting ourselves in danger every hour? I die every day! That is as certain, brothers and sisters, as my boasting of you—a boast that I make in Christ Jesus our Lord. If with merely human hopes I fought with wild animals at Ephesus, what would I have gained by it? If the dead are not raised,
‘Let us eat and drink,
   for tomorrow we die.’
Do not be deceived:
‘Bad company ruins good morals.’
Come to a sober and right mind, and sin no more; for some people have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

But someone will ask, ‘How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?’ Fool! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And as for what you sow, you do not sow the body that is to be, but a bare seed, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. Not all flesh is alike, but there is one flesh for human beings, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. There are both heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one thing, and that of the earthly is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; indeed, star differs from star in glory.

Collect
O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Personal Prayers and Thanksgivings

Intercessions

Christ rose from the dead and sits at the right hand of the Father. Let us beg him:
- Ever-living Christ, hear our prayer.
Remember, Lord, all who work in your service:
  -  let them give to your people an example of holy living. (R.)
Give the rulers of the state a spirit of justice and peace
  -  so that we can all live together in harmony.(R.)
Make our lives grow in wholeness;
  -  make the land fertile, so that the hungry are fed.(R.)
Saviour Christ, you have filled the whole world with light and called all creatures to life:
  -  shine eternal light on our brethren who have died.(R.)

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
 thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
 as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

O God, each year you give us the happiness of celebrating the Lord’s resurrection.
 By celebrating this feast that sanctifies time
 may we attain the reward of rejoicing eternally.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
 who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

May the risen Christ grant us the joy of eternal life. Amen
