An ordinary festival of the people -- except for one thing: Jesus was there, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. [John 2:11]
The Sign
There was a tradition about signs, [Exodus 4:8; Is 8:18 and Ezek 4:3]. ... that God was about to do something wonderful. The sign at the wedding feast in Cana was a manifestation of who he was, an epiphany, like the showing of the baby to the wise men. We believe the Lord came to his own creation. [John 1:1-4; 10-14].
A symbol of many changes
It is a story full of symbols which reminded the early Christians of many other things about him and their life in relation to him. Jesus used the symbolism of wine, or the vine, and of wedding feasts, many times to illustrate important aspects of the coming of the Kingdom. .... extraordinary abundance like the abundant harvest [Matthew 9:37; Mark 4:8], and the good measure, overflowing [Luke 6:38]. ... the true vine [John 15:1] ....the way that he told them to remember him [1 Cor. 11:23-26; Luke 22:17-19] in the bread and the wine of the great thanksgiving. ...resurrection `On the third day' ... Replacement of the old covenant ... and making things new -- new wine into fresh wineskins [Mark 2:22].
The sign of the wedding banquet
In many and various ways Jesus taught about the Kingdom by using the celebration of a wedding as a symbol of what it would be like ... people should be ready to come [Matthew 22:2-9; Matthew 25:10; Luke 12:36] and humbly [Luke 14:8] -- the followers of Jesus should expect to have a good time with him [Luke 7:33-34; Mark 2:18-20]. The Church is seen as the bride of Christ [2 Cor 11:2]. The great banquet of the kingdom is the marriage feast of Christ [Revelation 19:7-9; 21:2-4]
We anticipate the great celebration in the Lord's Supper and in marriage
Giving thanks for his victory over sin and death, in the sacrament we anticipate that great marriage feast. In marriage also we begin to share now in the new life. The presence of Jesus at the Wedding in Cana, reminds us of the means of grace.
