Monday, Weeks 1-4
Lenten Daily Office
Monday, Weeks 1-4

Hymns, Psalms and Canticles are from the prayer of the day.

Morning Prayer

READING
Exodus 19:4-6

You have seen for yourselves how I treated the Egyptians and how I bore you up on eagle wings and brought you here to myself. Therefore, if you hearken to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people, though all the earth is mine. You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation.

RESPONSORY
God himself will set me free, from the hunters snare.
God himself will set me free, from the hunters snare.
From those who would trap me with lying words
-and from the hunter's snare.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
God himself will set me free, from the hunters snare.

INTERCESSIONS
Week 1 and 3

Praise to Jesus, our Savior; by his death he has opened for us the way of salvation. Let us ask him:

   Lord, guide your people to walk in your ways.

God of mercy, you gave us new life through baptism,
 - make us grow day by day in your likeness.
May our generosity today bring joy to those in need,
 - in helping them may we find you.
Help us to do what is good, right and true in your sight,
 - and to seek you always with undivided hearts.
Forgive our sins against the unity of your family,
 - make us one in heart and spirit.

Our Father...

Week 2 and 4

Blessed be God the Father for his gift of this sacrifice of praise. In the spirit of this Lenten season, let us pray:

Instruct us, Lord, in the ways of your kingdom.

God of power and mercy, give us the spirit of prayer and repentance,
-with burning love for you and all mankind.
Help us to work with you in making all things new in Christ,
-and in spreading justice and peace throughout the world.
Teach us the meaning and value of creation,
-so that we may join its voice to ours as we sing your praise.
Forgive us for failing to see Christ in the poor, the distressed and the troublesome,
-and for our failure to reverence your Son in their persons.

Our Father...

PRAYER

Week 1   God our savior,
bring us back to you
and fill our minds with your wisdom.

and help us live by your commandment of love.

We ask this...

and continue to receive your help on earth.
Grant this...

Daytime Prayer

TERCE (Midmorning)

Ant. The time of penance has come, the time to atone for our sins and seek our salvation.

Reading
Wisdom 11:23-24a

You have mercy on all, because you can do all things;
   and you overlook the sins of men that they may repent.
For you love all things that are
   and loathe nothing that you have made.

Create in me a clean heart, O God.
 - Renew in me a steadfast spirit.

SEXT (Midday)

Antiphon: As I live, says the Lord, I do not wish the sinner to die, but to turn back to me and live.

Reading
Ezekiel 18:23

Do I indeed derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked? says the Lord God. Do I not rather rejoice when he turns from his evil way that he may live?

Turn away your face from my sins.
 - Blot out all my guilt.

NONES (Midafternoon)

Antiphon: Armed with God's justice and power, let us prove ourselves through patient endurance.

Reading
Isaiah 58:7

Share your bread with the hungry,
  shelter the oppressed and the homeless;
Cloth the naked when you see them,
  and do not turn your back on your own.

My sacrifice to God is a contrite spirit.
 - A humble contrite heart, O God, you will not spurn.

Evening Prayer

READING
Romans 12:1-2

I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.

RESPONSORY
To you, O Lord, I make my prayer for mercy;
To you, O Lord, I make my prayer for mercy;
heal my soul, for I have sinned against you.
I make my prayer for mercy;
Glory to the Father to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
To you, O Lord, I make my prayer for mercy.

MAGNIFICAT (Canticle of Mary)
Antiphons on Magnificat:
Week 1   Whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.
Week 2   Do not judge others and you will not be judged, for as you have judged them, so God will judge you.
Week 3   Jesus walked through the crowd and went away.
Week 4   The Father realized that it was at that very hour when Jesus had told him: Your son will live; and he and all his household became believers.

INTERCESSIONS
Week 1 and 3

Our Lord Jesus Christ has saved us from our sins.  As his people, let us call out to him:

   Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us.

Lord Christ, we pray for your holy Church; you gave yourself up to make it holy, cleansing it with water and the life-giving word,
 - renew it constantly and purify it by penance
Good Master, show young people the way you have chosen for each of them,
 - may they walk in it, and find fulfillment.
In your compassion you healed all forms of sickness; bring hope to the sick and raise them up,
 - teach us to love and care for them.
Make us mindful of the dignity you gave us in baptism,
 - may we live for you at every moment.
May the dead rise to glory in your peace,
 - grant us with them a share in your kingdom.

Our Father...

Week 2 and 4

Glory to God the Father, who has promised through his Son to grant what is asked by those who pray together.  With confidence in this promise, let us pray:

        Lord, look with favor on your people.

Lord, you gave the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai, and brought in to perfection in your Anointed One;
 - may all recognize theLaw written in their hearts, and keep it faithfully as a covenant (R.)
Give those in authority a true concern for their brothers and sisters entrusted to their care,
 - and inspire the hearts of the people to support their leaders. (R.)
Strengthen with your spirit the minds and hearts of missionaries,
 - and raise up a great company to help them from every nation.
Give your grace to children that they may grow in your favor,
 - and to young people, that they may reach their full stature by loving you and keeping your commandments. (R.)
