Triodion

Sixth week of Lent
Monday Matins

(after the 2nd reading of the Psalter):

Sessional hymn
Tone 1

Rolling away the stone of hardness from my heart,
Raise up my soul slain by the passions, loving Lord.
Count me worthy in compunction to bring palms of virtue
To you, the victor over hell!
So may I obtain eternal life,
Singing the praises of your power and your compassion,
For you alone are the lover of mankind!

Glory...

Rolling away the stone of hardness from my heart...

Now and ever...

Theotokion
Beholding in you, full of grace, the wonder of wonders,
The creation rejoices!
For you have conceived without seed and ineffably borne as a child
Him upon whom the leaders of the angelic hosts do not dare gaze!
Pray to him, Theotokos, for the salvation of our souls!

(after the 3rd reading of the Psalter):

Sessional hymn
Tone 1

As we set out upon the sixth week of the fast,
Let us sing a hymn to Christ in preparation for the feast of palms!
He comes for our sake seated on the foal of an ass
To subdue as king the wild and unruly nations to his Father.
Let us prepare for him branches of the virtues,
That with rejoicing, we may see his resurrection!

Glory...

As we set out upon the sixth week of the fast...

Now and ever...

Theotokion
Most holy Virgin, you carried in your arms your creator
Who in his lovingkindness was made flesh.
Stretch out those arms towards him and entreat him
To deliver us from every passion, danger and temptation,
For we praise you with love and cry aloud:
Glory to him who dwelt in you!
Glory to him who came forth from you!
Glory to him who frees us through your childbearing!

Apostikha
Tone 5

Do not condemn me, O Christ, to the flames of Gehenna,
As the rich man who knew Lazarus.
But grant a drop of your love for mankind even to me
As I beg with tears,
And have mercy on me, O God!

Do not condemn me,..

Blessed is the army of the heavenly king!
Though on earth they endured great sufferings,
They achieved the rank of angels!
They did not care for the flesh and became equals to the bodiless hosts.
By their prayers, Lord, save our souls!

Glory... Now and ever...

Theotokion
Full of grace, by your prayers, be our advocate;
Entreat great bounty for our souls
And forgiveness of our many transgressions!

Sixth (Palm) week of Lent
Monday Vespers

"Lord I call..."

Tone 6 (by Joseph)

Master, by my many sins and pleasures of life
I, a wretched person, have weakened my soul
And am constantly in a bed of laziness.
I cry out to you, compassionate one:
Having come to me, grant me mercy and health.
Savior, do not forsake me
Lest I fall asleep in death,
Lest the enemy rejoice in leading me to hell
Where he always seeks to curse me.

Lord, I have imitated the merciless rich man,
Rejoicing vainly, burdened with pleasure's passions.
Seeing my mind, like Lazarus, before the gates of repentance,
I pass by heedlessly,
Leaving it torn, wounded, and diseased by passions.
Therefore I deserve Gehenna's flames.
But deliver me from them, only merciful master!

Tone 5 (by Theodore)

Passing by on the other side of the river Jordan,
You prophesied concerning Lazarus, Lord,
That he was not sick unto death,
But that this had come to pass for the glory of God.
Glory to your mighty acts and powers,
For you have destroyed death by your many mercies, lover of mankind!

Prokeimenon
Tone 4

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; * for his mercy endures forever!
Verse: Let the redeemed of the Lord say so!

Reading from Genesis 27: 1-41

Prokeimenon
Tone 7

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, * and your glory over all the earth!
Verse: My heart is ready, O God; my heart is ready!

Reading from Proverbs 19: 16-25

Apostikha
Tone 4

Savior, free us from soul-destroying greed
And number us in the bosom of Abraham
Together with poor Lazarus.
For our sake you became poor, yet you are rich in mercies!
You lead us from corruption to incorruption,
For you are a compassionate God, the lover of mankind!

Savior, free us from soul-destroying greed...

As you accepted the patience of your holy martyrs,
Accept our song, lover of mankind,
Granting us by their supplications great mercy.

Glory... Now and ever...

Theotokion
Deliver us from danger,
Mother of Christ our God,
For you gave birth to the creator of all!
May we all cry to you:
Rejoice, only advocate of our souls!
