CORPUS CHRISTI
Thursday after Trinity Sunday (or the Sunday following)

Where the Solemnity of Corpus Christi is not observed as a holy day, it is assigned to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday, which is then considered the proper day in the calendar.

Morning Prayer

Invitatory
The Invitatory opens the first Office of the day. If the Office of Readings is the first Office of the day, begin below.

Lord, open my lips.
 - And my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Psalm 95 is the traditional Invitatory Psalm. Psalm 24, 67, or 100 may be substituted.

Antiphon: Come let us adore Christ the Lord, the bread of life.

Morning Prayer
Psalter, Sunday Week I

God, come to my assistance.
 - Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
 -  as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.
Amen. (Alleluia.)

HYMN

Alleluia! sing to Jesus!
His the scepter, his the throne;
Alleluia! his the triumph
His the victory alone:
Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion
Thunder like a mighty flood;
Jesus, out of every nation,
Hath redeemed us by his Blood.

Alleluia! Bread of angels,
Thou on earth our food, our stay;
Alleluia! here the sinful
Flee to thee from day to day:
Intercessor, friend of sinners,
Earth’s Redeemer, plead for me,
Where the songs of all the sinless
Sweep across the crystal sea.

Alleluia! King eternal,
Thee the Lord of lords we own;
Alleluia! born of Mary,
Earth thy footstool, heav’n thy throne:
Thou within the veil hast entered,
Robed in flesh, our great High Priest;
Thou on earth both Priest and Victim
In the Eucharistic feast.
Melody: Hyfrydol 87.87.D; Music: R. H. Prichard, 1811-1887; Text: William Chatterton Dix, 1837-1898

Or:

Lord, who at Your first Eucharist did pray
That all your Church might be for ever one,
Grant us at every Eucharist to say
With longing heart and soul, "Your will be done."
O may we all one bread, one body be,
Through this blest Sacrament of Unity.

For all your Church, O Lord, we intercede;
O make our lack of charity to cease;
Draw us nearer each to each we plead,
By drawing all to You, O Prince of Peace;
Thus may we all one bread, one body be,
Through this blest Sacrament of Unity.

We pray then, too, for wand'rers from Your fold;
O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep,
Back to the faith which saints believed of old,
Back to the Church that still that faith does keep;
Soon may we all one bread, one body be,
Through this blest Sacrament of Unity.

So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease,
May we be one with all Your Church above,
One with Your saints in one unending peace,
One with Your saints in one unbounded love;
More blessed still in peace and love to be
One with the Trinity in Unity.
Melody: Sacramentum Unitatus 10.10.10.D; Text: William H. Monk 1875

Or:

God, with hidden majesty, lies in presence here,
I, with deep devotion, my true God revere:
Whom this outward shape and form secretly contains,
Christ in his divinity manhood still retains.

All my other senses cannot now perceive,
But my hearing, taught by faith, always will believe:
I accept whatever God the Son has said:
Those who hear the word of God, by the truth are fed.

Wounds that doubting Thomas saw I could never see,
but I still acknowledge you, my true God to be!
Grant that I shall always keep strong in faith and trust,
guided by my Savior, merciful and just.

Blest reminder of the death suffered for mankind,
Sacrament of living bread, health to every mind,
Let my soul approach you, live within your grace,
Let me taste the perfect joys time shall not efface.
Melody: Adoro Te 12.12.12.12; Text: Adoro Te Devote, Thomas Aquinas

PSALMODY

Antiphon 1: You fed your people with the food of angels; you gave them bread from heaven, alleluia.

O God, you are my God, for you I long;
for you my soul is thirsting.
My body pines for you
like a dry, weary land without water.
So I gaze on you in the sanctuary
to see your strength and your glory.

For your love is better than life,
my lips will speak your praise.
So I will bless you all my life,
in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul shall be filled as with a banquet,
my mouth shall praise you with joy.

On my bed I remember you.
On you I muse through the night
for you have been my help;
in the shadow of your wings I rejoice.
My soul clings to you;
your right hand holds me fast. Glory...

Psalm Prayer: Father, creator of unfailing light, give that same light to those who call to you. May our lips praise you; our lives proclaim your goodness; our work give you honor, and our voices celebrate you for ever.

Antiphon 1 You fed your people with the food of angels; you gave them bread from heaven, alleluia.

Antiphon 2 Holy priests will offer incense and bread to God, alleluia.

Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord.
Praise and exalt him above all forever.
Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord.
You heavens, bless the Lord.
All you waters above the heavens, bless the Lord.
All you hosts of the Lord, bless the Lord.
Sun and moon, bless the Lord.
Stars of heaven, bless the Lord.

Every shower and dew, bless the Lord.
All you winds, bless the Lord.
Fire and heat, bless the Lord.
Cold and chill, bless the Lord.
Dew and rain, bless the Lord.
Frost and chill, bless the Lord.
Ice and snow, bless the Lord.
Nights and days, bless the Lord.
Light and darkness, bless the Lord.
Lightnings and clouds, bless the Lord.

Let the earth bless the Lord.
Praise and exalt him above all forever.
Mountains and hills, bless the Lord.
Everything growing from the earth, bless the Lord.
You springs, bless the Lord.

Seas and rivers, bless the Lord.
You dolphins and all water creatures, bless the Lord.
All you birds of the air, bless the Lord.
All you beasts, wild and tame, bless the Lord.
You sons of men, bless the Lord.

O Israel, bless the Lord.
Praise and exalt him above all forever.
Priests of the Lord, bless the Lord.
Servants of the Lord, bless the Lord.
Spirits and souls of the just, bless the Lord.
Holy men of humble heart, bless the Lord.
Hananiah, Azariah, Mishael, bless the Lord.
Praise and exalt him above all forever.

Let us bless the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Let us praise and exalt him above all forever.
Blessed are you, Lord, in the firmament of heaven.
Praiseworthy and glorious and exalted above all forever.

Antiphon 2 Holy priests will offer incense and bread to God, alleluia.

Antiphon 3 I will give to the one who is victorious the hidden bread and a new name, alleluia.

Sing a new song to the Lord,
his praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel rejoice in its maker,
let Zion’s sons exult in their king.
Let them praise his name with dancing
and make music with timbrel and harp.

For the Lord takes delight in his people.
He crowns the poor with salvation.
Let the faithful rejoice in their glory,
shout for joy and take their rest.
Let the praise of God be on their lips
and a two-edged sword in their hand,

to deal out vengeance to the nations
and punishment on all the peoples;
to bind their kings in chains
and their nobles in fetters of iron;
to carry out the sentence pre-ordained;
this honor is for all his faithful. Glory...

Psalm Prayer: Let Israel rejoice in you, Lord, and acknowledge you as creator and redeemer. We put our trust in your faithfulness and proclaim the wonderful truths of salvation. May your loving kindness embrace us now and for ever.

Antiphon 3 I will give to the one who is victorious the hidden bread and a new name, alleluia.

READING     Malachi 1:11
From the rising of the sun, even to its setting,
  my name is great among the nations;
And everywhere they bring sacrifice to my name,
  and a pure offering;
For great is my name among the nations,
  says the Lord of hosts.

RESPONSORY
You bring forth bread from the earth, alleluia, alleluia.
 - You bring forth bread from the earth, alleluia, alleluia.
And wine which gives warmth to men's hearts,
 - alleluia, alleluia.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
 - You bring forth bread from the earth, alleluia, alleluia.

BENEDICTUS (Canticle of Zechariah)
Antiphon: I am the living bread which comes down from heaven; anyone who eats this bread shall live forever, alleluia.

INTERCESSIONS
Brethren, let us pray to Jesus Christ, the bread of life, as we joyfully say:

            Happy are those who are called to your heavenly banquet.

Priest of the new and eternal covenant, you offered perfect sacrifice to the Father on the altar of the cross,
 – teach us to offer ourselves with you.

King of justice and peace, you consecrated bread and wine as the sign of your offering,
 – unite us as victims with you.

True worshiper of the Father, your perfect offering is celebrated by the Church from the rising to the setting of the sun,
 – unite in your body those who partake of the one bread.

Manna from heaven, you nourish the Church with your body and blood,
 – grant that we may walk strengthened by this food.

Unseen host of our banquet, you stand at the door and knock,
 – come to us, stay and share the evening meal with us.

Our Father...

PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us the Eucharist
as the memorial of your suffering and death.
May our worship of this sacrament of your Body and Blood
help us to experience the salvation you won for us
and the peace of the kingdom
where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

ALTERNATIVE PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ,
we worship you living among us
in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood.
May we offer to our Father in heaven
a solemn pledge of undivided love.
May we offer to our brothers and sisters
a life poured out in loving service of that kingdom
where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.
