Pentecost - Evening Prayer II

Evening Prayer II

God, come to my assistance.
 - Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
 - as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.
Amen. Alleluia.

HYMN

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator, come,
From thy bright heav’nly throne,
Come take possession of our souls,
And make them all thy own.

Thou who art called the Paraclete,
Best gift of God above,
The living spring, the living fire,
Sweet unction and true love.

Thou who art sevenfold in thy grace,
Finger of God’s right hand
His promise teaching little ones
To speak and understand.

O guide our minds with thy blessed light,
With love our hearts inflame;
And with thy strength, which ne'er decays
Confirm our mortal frame.

Far from us drive our deadly foe;
True peace unto us bring;
And through all perils lead us safe
Beneath thy sacred wing.

Through thee may we the Father know,
Through thee the eternal Son,
And thee, the Spirit of them both,
Thrice-blessed Three in One.

All glory to the Father be,
With his coequal Son;
The same to thee, great Paraclete,
While endless ages run.

PSALMODY

Antiphon 1: The Spirit of the Lord has filled the whole world, alleluia.

Psalm 110:1-5,7

The Lord's revelation to my Master:
"Sit on my right:
your foes I will put beneath your feet."
The Lord will wield from Zion
your scepter of power:
rule in the midst of all your foes.

A prince from the day of your birth
on the holy mountains;
from the womb before the dawn I begot you.

The Lord has sworn an oath he will not change.
"You are a priest for ever,
a priest like Melchizedeck of old."

The Master standing at your right hand
will shatter kings in the day of his wrath.

He shall drink from the stream by the wayside
and therefore he shall lift up his head. Glory...

Antiphon 1: The Spirit of the Lord has filled the whole world, alleluia.

Antiphon 2: Send us your strength, O God, from your holy temple in Jerusalem, and perfect your work in us, alleluia.

Psalm 114

When Israel came forth from Egypt,
Jacob's sons from an alien people
Judah became the Lord's temple,
Israel became his kingdom.

The sea fled at the sight:
the Jordan turned back on its course,
the mountains leapt like rams
and the hills like yearling sheep.

Why was it, sea, that you fled,
that you turned back, Jordan, on your course?
Mountains, that you leapt like rams;
hills, like yearling sheep?

Tremble, O earth, before the Lord,
in the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns the rock into a pool
and flint into a spring of water. Glory...

Antiphon 2: Send us your strength, O God, from your holy temple in Jerusalem, and perfect your work in us, alleluia.

Antiphon 3: All were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak, alleluia.

Canticle  -  See Revelation 19:1-7

Alleluia.
Salvation, glory, and power to our God:
(Alleluia.)
his judgments are honest and true.
Alleluia (alleluia).

Alleluia.
Sing praise to our God, all you his servants,
(Alleluia.)
all who worship him reverently, great and small.
Alleluia (alleluia).

Alleluia.
The Lord our all-powerful God is King;
(Alleluia.)
Let us rejoice, sing praise, and give him glory.
Alleluia (alleluia).

Alleluia.
The wedding feast of the Lamb has begun,
(Alleluia.)
and his bride is prepared to welcome him.
Alleluia (alleluia). Glory...

Antiphon 3: All were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak, alleluia.

READING          Ephesians 4:3-6
Make every effort to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

RESPONSORY
The Spirit of the Lord has filled the whole world, alleluia, alleluia.
 - The Spirit of the Lord has filled the whole world, alleluia, alleluia.
He sustains all creation and knows every word that is spoken,
 - alleluia, alleluia.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
 - The Spirit of the Lord has filled the whole world, alleluia, alleluia.

MAGNIFICAT (Canticle of Mary)
Antiphon: Today we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, alleluia; on this day the Holy Spirit appeared before the apostles in tongues of fire and gave them his spiritual gifts. He sent them out to preach to the whole world, and to proclaim that all who believe and are baptized shall be saved, alleluia.

INTERCESSIONS

God the Father has gathered his Church in unity through Christ. With joy in our hearts let us ask him:

Send your Holy Spirit into the Church.

You desire the unity of all Christians through one baptism in the Spirit,
 - make all who believe one in heart and soul.

You desire the whole world to be filled with the Spirit,
 - help all mankind to build a world of justice and peace.

Lord God, Father of all mankind, you desire to gather together your scattered children in unity of faith,
 - enlighten the world by the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Through the Spirit you make all things new,
 - heal the sick, comfort the distressed, give salvation to all.

Through the Spirit you raised your Son from the dead,
 - raise up the bodies of the dead into everlasting life.

Our Father...

COLLECT

Almighty ever-living God,
who willed the Paschal Mystery
to be encompassed as a sign in fifty days,
grant that from out of the scattered nations
the confusion of many tongues
may be gathered by heavenly grace
into one great confession of your name.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

Or:

Grant, we pray, almighty God,
that the splendor of your glory
may shine forth upon us
and that, by the bright rays of the Holy Spirit,
the light of your light may confirm the hearts
of those born again by your grace.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

Or:

O God, who by the mystery of today's great feast
sanctify your whole Church in every people and nation,
pour out, we pray, the gifts of the Holy Spirit
across the face of the earth
and, with the divine grace that was at work
when the Gospel was first proclaimed,
fill now once more the hearts of believers.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.
