Feast of Corpus Christi

Deus in adjutorium meum intende,
Domine ad adjuvandum me festina

Agios o Theos, Agios Ischyros, Agios Athanatos,
Eleison imas.
Sanctus Deus, Sanctus Fortis, Sanctus Immortális,
miserére nobis.
Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One,
have mercy on us.

OPENING

Christ the Lord, † a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek,
-- offered bread and wine.

The gracious and merciful Lord † provides food for those who fear him,
in remembrance of his wonderful works.

I will lift up † the cup of salvation,
and offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving.

May the children † of the Church be like olive branches
around the table of the Lord.

He who makes peace † in the Church's borders is the Lord,
who fills us with the finest of wheat.

PHOS HILARON

Antiphon: His flesh is food indeed, and his blood is drink indeed: Come let us adore him.

O gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of Life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Antiphon: His flesh is food indeed, and his blood is drink indeed: Come let us adore him.

HYMN
          Pange Lingua

I shall praise the Savior's glory,
of His flesh the mystery sing,
and the blood, all price excelling,
shed by our immortal King;
God made man for our salvation,
Who from virgin pure did spring.

Born for us, and for us given,
born a man like us below,
Christ as man with man residing,
lived the seed of truth to sow,
suffered bitter death unflinching,
and immortal love did show.

On the night before He suffered,
seated with His chosen band,
Jesus, when they all had feasted,
faithful to the law's command,
far more precious food provided;
gave Himself with His own hand.

Word made flesh, true bread of heaven
by His word made flesh to be;
from the wine His blood is taken,
though our senses cannot see;
faith alone which is unshaken
shows pure hearts the mystery.

Therefore we, before Him falling,
this great sacrament revere;
ancient forms are now departed,
for new acts of grace are here;
faith our feeble senses aiding,
makes the Savior's presence clear.

To the everlasting Father,
and to His Son Who reigns on high,
with the Holy Ghost proceeding
forth from each eternally,
be all honor, glory, blessing,
power and endless majesty. Amen.

READING     1 Corinthians 11:23-25
This is what I received from the Lord, and in turn passed on to you: that on the same night that he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, and thanked God for it and broke it, and he said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this as a memorial of me.’ In the same way he took the cup after supper, and said, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Whenever you drink it, do this as a memorial of me.’

The Psalter

Ant. 1: Christ the Lord, + a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedeck, / offered bread and wine.

1
The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, *
until I make your enemies your footstool."
2
The LORD will send the scepter of your power out of Zion, *
saying, "Rule over your enemies round about you.
3
Princely state has been yours from the day of your birth; *
in the beauty of holiness have I begotten you,
like dew from the womb of the morning."
4
The LORD has sworn and he will not recant: *
"You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek."
5
The Lord who is at your right hand
will smite kings in the day of his wrath; *
he will rule over the nations.
7
He will drink from the brook beside the road; *
therefore he will lift high his head.

Ant. 1: Christ the Lord, + a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedeck, / offered bread and wine.

Ant. 2: May the children + of the Church be like olive branches / around the table of the Lord.

1
I love the LORD, because he has heard the voice of my
                                supplication, *
because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him.
2
The cords of death entangled me;
the grip of the grave took hold of me; *
I came to grief and sorrow.
3
Then I called upon the Name of the LORD: *
"O LORD, I pray you, save my life."
4
Gracious is the LORD and righteous; *
our God is full of compassion.
5
The LORD watches over the innocent; *
I was brought very low, and he helped me.
6
Turn again to your rest, O my soul. *
for the LORD has treated you well.
7
For you have rescued my life from death, *
my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling.
8
I will walk in the presence of the LORD *
in the land of the living.
9
I believed, even when I said,
"I have been brought very low." *
In my distress I said, "No one can be trusted."
Ant. 2: May the children + of the Church be like olive branches / around the table of the Lord..
Ant. 3: I will lift up + the cup of salvation / and offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving.

10
How shall I repay the LORD *
for all the good things he has done for me?
11
I will lift up the cup of salvation *
and call upon the Name of the LORD.
12
I will fulfill my vows to the LORD *
in the presence of all his people.
13
Precious in the sight of the LORD *
is the death of his servants.
14
O LORD, I am your servant; *
     I am your servant and the child of your handmaid;
you have freed me from my bonds.
15
I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving *
and call upon the Name of the LORD.
16
I will fulfill my vows to the LORD *
in the presence of all his people,
17
In the courts of the LORD'S house, *
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.
     Hallelujah!

Ant. 3: I will lift up + the cup of salvation / and offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.

First Reading
Exodus 16:4,14-21

Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not. When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, ‘What is it?’ For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, ‘It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat. This is what the Lord has commanded: “Gather as much of it as each of you needs, an omer to a person according to the number of persons, all providing for those in their own tents.” ’ The Israelites did so, some gathering more, some less. But when they measured it with an omer, those who gathered much had nothing over, and those who gathered little had no shortage; they gathered as much as each of them needed. And Moses said to them, ‘Let no one leave any of it over until morning.’ But they did not listen to Moses; some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and became foul. And Moses was angry with them. Morning by morning they gathered it, as much as each needed; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.

Second Reading
John 6:27-40

Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.’ Then they said to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of God?’ Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’ So they said to him, ‘What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” ’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’

Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’

Second Canticle
Magnificat

Antiphon: O sacred banquet, + in which Christ is received, the memory of his passion renewed, / the soul is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is bestowed, alleluia.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; *
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed: *
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him *
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm, *
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, *
and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, *
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel, *
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

The promise he made to our fathers, *
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.

Antiphon: O sacred banquet, + in which Christ is received, the memory of his passion renewed, / the soul is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is bestowed, alleluia.

Collect
O God, in a wonderful sacrament you have left us a memorial of your passion: grant us so to venerate the sacred mysteries of your Body and Blood, that we may always perceive within ourselves the fruit of your redemption; for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Intercessions

Christ invites us all to his feast, at which he gives his body and blood to bring life to the world. We pray to him:
- Christ, bread of heaven, give us eternal life.
Christ, Son of the living God, you commanded us to celebrate the eucharistic feast in commemoration of you:
  -  bestow on your Church the gift of celebrating it worthily. (R.)
Christ, sole High Priest, you gave priests the task of offering your sacraments:
  -  may they live the reality of what they celebrate in signs. (R.)
Christ, manna from heaven, you make into one body all who share the one bread:
  -  renew peace and harmony among all who believe in you. (R.)
Christ, heavenly healer, in your bread you give us the remedy of immortality and a pledge of resurrection:
  -  give health to the sick and living hope to sinners. (R.)
Christ, king who is to come, you commanded us to celebrate the mysteries and proclaim your death until you come again:
  -  give all who have died in you a share in your resurrection. (R.)

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

O God, you have given us a wonderful sacrament as an abiding memorial of your passion.
Grant, we pray you, that we may celebrate the sacred mysteries of your body and blood
in such a way that we constantly feel within us the effects of your redemption.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.
