Deuteronomy 8:2-3

2Remember the long way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments. 3He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD

Psalm 34

1 I will bless the Lord continually *
his praise shall be always in my mouth.
2 Let my soul boast of the Lord *
the humble shall hear it and rejoice.
3 O praise the Lord with me *
let us exalt his name together.
4 For I sought the Lord's help and he answered *
and he freed me from all my fears.
5 Look towards him and be bright with joy *
your faces shall not be ashamed.
6 Here is a wretch who cried, and the Lord heard him *
and saved him from all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps round those who fear him *
and delivers them in their need.
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good *
happy the man who hides in him!
9 Fear the Lord, all you his holy ones *
for those who fear him never lack.
10 Lions may suffer want and go hungry *
but those who seek the Lord lack nothing good.

11 Come, my children, listen to me *
and I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 Which of you relishes life *
wants time to enjoy good things?
13 Keep your tongue from evil *
and your lips from telling lies.
14 Turn from evil and do good *
seek peace and pursue it.
15 The eyes of God are on the righteous *
and his ears towards their cry.
16 The Lord sets his face against wrongdoers *
to root out their memory from the earth.
17 The righteous cry; the Lord hears it *
and frees them from all their afflictions.
18 The Lord is close to those who are broken-hearted *
and the crushed in spirit he saves.
19 The trials of the righteous are many *
but our God delivers him from them all.
20 He guards all his bones *
so that not one is broken.
21 Evil will slay the wicked *
and those who hate the righteous will be destroyed.
22 The Lord ransoms the lives of his servants *
and none who hide in him will be destroyed.

Revelation 19:1-2a,4-9

After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, 'Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power to our God, 2for his judgments are true and just

; 4And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who is seated on the throne, saying, 'Amen. Hallelujah!'

5 And from the throne came a voice saying, 'Praise our God, all you his servants, and all who fear him, small and great.' 6Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunderpeals, crying out, 'Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready; 8to her it has been granted to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure'- for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. 9And the angel said to me, 'Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.' And he said to me, 'These are true words of God.'

1 Cor 10:1-4,16-17

I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3and all ate the same spiritual food, 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.

16The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? 17Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.

1 Cor 11:23-29

For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, 'This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' 25In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.' 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 27Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. 28Examine yourselves, and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29For all who eat and drink without discerning the body, eat and drink judgment against themselves.

John 6:47-58

47Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.' 52The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?' 53So Jesus said to them, 'Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.'

Evening Prayer I

Psalm 111

1 Alleluia.
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, *
in the company of the faithful and in the congregation.
2 The works of the Lord are great, *
sought out by all who delight in them.
3 His work is full of majesty and honour *
and his righteousness endures for ever.
4 He appointed a memorial for his marvellous deeds; *
the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.
5 He gave food to those who feared him; *
he is ever mindful of his covenant.
6 He showed his people the power of his works *
in giving them the heritage of the nations.
7 The works of his hands are truth and justice; *
all his commandments are sure.
8 They stand fast for ever and ever; *
they are done in truth and equity.
9 He sent redemption to his people;
he commanded his covenant for ever; *
holy and awesome is his name.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
a good understanding have those who live by it; *
his praise endures for ever.

Psalm 147:12-20

12 But the Lord delights in those who fear him, *
who put their trust in his steadfast love.
13 Sing praise to the Lord, O Jerusalem; *
praise your God, O Zion;
14 For he has strengthened the bars of your gates *
and has blest your children within you.
15 He has established peace in your borders *
and satisfies you with the finest wheat.
16 He sends forth his command to the earth *
and his word runs very swiftly.
17 He gives snow like wool *
and scatters the hoarfrost like ashes.
18 He casts down his hailstones like morsels of bread; *
who can endure his frost?
19 He sends forth his word and melts them; *
he blows with his wind and the waters flow.
20 He declares his word to Jacob, *
his statutes and judgements to Israel.

Exodus 12:21-28

Then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, 'Go, select lambs for your families, and slaughter the passover lamb. 22Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood in the basin. None of you shall go outside the door of your house until morning. 23For the LORD will pass through to strike down the Egyptians; when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over that door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you down. 24You shall observe this rite as a perpetual ordinance for you and your children. 25When you come to the land that the LORD will give you, as he has promised, you shall keep this observance. 26And when your children ask you, "What do you mean by this observance?" 27you shall say, "It is the passover sacrifice to the LORD, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt, when he struck down the Egyptians but spared our houses."' And the people bowed down and worshiped. 28The Israelites went and did just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron.

Mark 14:12-26

On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, his disciples said to him, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?' 13So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, 14and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, "The Teacher asks, Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?" 15He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.' 16So the disciples set out and went to the city, and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.

17 When it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18And when they had taken their places and were eating, Jesus said, 'Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.' 19They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, 'Surely, not I?' 20He said to them, 'It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the bowl with me. 21For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.'

22 While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, 'Take; this is my body.' 23Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. 24He said to them, 'This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.'

26 When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Morning Prayer

Psalm 63:2-9

2 My flesh faints for you, *
as in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.
3 So would I gaze upon you in your holy place, *
that I might behold your power and your glory.
4 Your loving-kindness is better than life itself *
and so my lips shall praise you.
5 I will bless you as long as I live *
and lift up my hands in your name.
6 My soul shall be satisfied, as with marrow and fatness, *
and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips,
7 When I remember you upon my bed *
and meditate on you in the watches of the night.
8 For you have been my helper *
and under the shadow of your wings will I rejoice.
9 My soul clings to you; *
your right hand shall hold me fast.

Psalm 149

1 Alleluia.
O sing to the Lord a new song; *
sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful.
2 Let Israel rejoice in their maker; *
let the children of Zion be joyful in their king.
3 Let them praise his name in the dance; *
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and lyre.
4 For the Lord has pleasure in his people *
and adorns the poor with salvation.
5 Let the faithful be joyful in glory; *
let them rejoice in their ranks,
6 With the praises of God in their mouths *
and a two-edged sword in their hands;
7 To execute vengeance on the nations *
and punishment on the peoples;
8 To bind their kings in chains *
and their nobles with fetters of iron;
9 To execute on them the judgement decreed: *
such honour have all his faithful servants.
Alleluia.

Genesis 14:13-20

Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner; these were allies of Abram. 14When Abram heard that his nephew had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred eighteen of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15He divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and routed them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16Then he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his nephew Lot with his goods, and the women and the people.

17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). 18And King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High. 19He blessed him and said, 'Blessed be Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth; 20and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!' And Abram gave him one tenth of everything.

Hebrews 4:14-5:10

Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; 3and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. 4And one does not presume to take this honour, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

5 So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him,
'You are my Son,
today I have begotten you';
6as he says also in another place,
'You are a priest for ever,
according to the order of Melchizedek.'

7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Evening Prayer II

Psalm 110:1-5,7

1 The Lord said to my lord, 'Sit at my right hand, *
until I make your enemies your footstool.'
2 May the Lord stretch forth the sceptre of your power; *
rule from Zion in the midst of your enemies.
3 'Noble are you on this day of your birth; *
on the holy mountain, from the womb of the dawn
the dew of your new birth is upon you.'
4 The Lord has sworn and will not retract: *
'You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.'
5 The king at your right hand, O Lord, *
shall smite down kings in the day of his wrath.
7 He shall drink from the brook beside the way; *
therefore shall he lift high his head.

Psalm 116:10-19

10 How shall I repay the Lord *
for all the benefits he has given to me?
11 I will lift up the cup of salvation *
and call upon the name of the Lord.
12 I will fulfil my vows to the Lord *
in the presence of all his people.
13 Precious in the sight of the Lord *
is the death of his faithful servants.
14 O Lord, I am your servant, *
your servant, the child of your handmaid;
you have freed me from my bonds.
15 I will offer to you a sacrifice of thanksgiving *
and call upon the name of the Lord.
16 I will fulfil my vows to the Lord *
in the presence of all his people,
17 In the courts of the house of the Lord, *
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.
Alleluia.

Exodus 16:4,14-21

4Then the LORD said to Moses, 'I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not. 14When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. 15When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, 'What is it?' For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, 'It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. 16This is what the LORD has commanded: "Gather as much of it as each of you needs, an omer to a person according to the number of persons, all providing for those in their own tents."' 17The Israelites did so, some gathering more, some less. 18But when they measured it with an omer, those who gathered much had nothing over, and those who gathered little had no shortage; they gathered as much as each of them needed. 19And Moses said to them, 'Let no one leave any of it over until morning.' 20But they did not listen to Moses; some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and became foul. And Moses was angry with them. 21Morning by morning they gathered it, as much as each needed; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.

John 6:27-40

Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.'

Then they said to him, 'What must we do to perform the works of God?' Jesus answered them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.' So they said to him, 'What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, "He gave them bread from heaven to eat."' Then Jesus said to them, 'Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.' They said to him, 'Sir, give us this bread always.' Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.'
