Evening Prayer I

Deus in adjutorium meum intende,
Domine ad adjuvandum me festina

Agios o Theos, Agios Ischyros, Agios Athanatos,
Eleison imas.
Sanctus Deus, Sanctus Fortis, Sanctus Immortális,
miserére nobis.
Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One,

OPENING

Praise and unending glory + to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
three persons in one God, alleluia.

The Father spoke the Word, + and there was light,
and the Spirit moved over the face of the waters.

When the Father + sent the Son for our salvation,
he was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Go and make + all nations my disciples,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Of whom are all things, + through whom are all things, in whom are all things:
to Him be glory for ever.

LUCERNARIA
Glory to you, O Lord, * in the high vault of heaven.
Glory to you, O Lord, * in the high vault of heaven.
You are worthy of praise for ever:
in the high vault of heaven.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
Glory to you, O Lord, * in the high vault of heaven.

PHOS HILARON

Antiphon: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God: come let us adore him.

O gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of Life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

READING     Romans 11:33-36
How deep are the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How inscrutable his judgments, how unsearchable his ways! For "who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor? Who has given him anything so as to deserve return? For from him and through him and for him all things are. The him be glory forever. Amen.

HYMN          Immensa et una trinitas
Immensa et una, Trinitas,
cuius potestas omnia
facit regitque tempora
et exstat ante sęcula.

Tu sola pleno sufficis
tibi beata gaudio;
tu pura, simplex, provida,
cęlos et orbem contines.

Omnis, Pater, fons gratię,
lumen paternę glorię,
Sancte utriusque Spiritus
interminata caritas.

Ex te suprema origine,
Trias benigna, profluit
creata quicquid sustinet,
quicquid decore perficit.

Quos et corona muneras
adoptionis intimę,
nos templa fac nitentia
tibi placere iugiter.

O viva lux, nos angelis
da iungi in aula cęlica,
ut grati amoris laudibus
te concinamus perpetim.

Almighty Trinity in One,
Whose sov'reign pow'r all things has made,
You rule the ages and the world,
Before all time You reigned supreme.

Full plenitude of joy is yours,
Alone and perfect, needing naught,
Unsullied, Simple, Purity,
All things are held within you sway.

O Father, fount of every grace,
O Father's glory, God the Son,
O Holy Spirit of them both,
Unending source of love divine.

To you, the Origin serene,
The Godhead one in Persons three,
All things created owe their form
And every beauty they contain.

Your children whom you have endowed
With sonship and adoption's gift,
Beg you to make them temples fair
For your indwelling Spirit's joy.

O living Light, grant us the grace
To join the angels round our throne,
That praising you with grateful love,
Creation's hymn may never end. Amen.

PSALMODY

Antiphon 1: Glory to you, O Trinity, one God in three equal Persons, as in the beginning, so now and for ever.

    Psalm 104     Benedic, anima mea

1
Bless the LORD, O my soul; *
O LORD my God, how excellent is your greatness!
you are clothed with majesty and splendor.
2
You wrap yourself with light as with a cloak *
and spread out the heavens like a curtain.
3
You lay the beams of your chambers in the waters above; *
         you make the clouds your chariot;
you ride on the wings of the wind.
4
You make the winds your messengers *
and flames of fire your servants.
5
You have set the earth upon its foundations, *
so that it never shall move at any time.
6
You covered it with the Deep as with a mantle; *
the waters stood higher than the mountains.
7
At your rebuke they fled; *
at the voice of your thunder they hastened away.
8
They went up into the hills and down to the valleys beneath, *
to the places you had appointed for them.
9
You set the limits that they should not pass; *
they shall not again cover the earth.
10
You send the springs into the valleys; *
         they flow between the mountains.
11
All the beasts of the field drink their fill from them, *
and the wild asses quench their thirst.
12
Beside them the birds of the air make their nests *
         and sing among the branches.

Antiphon 1 Glory to you, O Trinity, one God in three equal Persons, as in the beginning, so now and for ever.

Antiphon 2 Praise to the Holy Trinity and undivided Unity. Let us praise God for he has shown us his mercy.

13
You water the mountains from your dwelling on high; *
the earth is fully satisfied by the fruit of your works.
14
You make grass grow for flocks and herds *
         and plants to serve mankind;
15
That they may bring forth food from the earth, *
and wine to gladden our hearts,
16
Oil to make a cheerful countenance, *
and bread to strengthen the heart.
17
The trees of the LORD are full of sap, *
the cedars of Lebanon which he planted,
18
In which the birds build their nests, *
and in whose tops the stork makes his dwelling.
19
The high hills are a refuge for the mountain goats, *
and the stony cliffs for the rock badgers.
20
You appointed the moon to mark the seasons, *
and the sun knows the time of its setting.
21
You make darkness that it may be night, *
in which all the beasts of the forest prowl.
22
The lions roar after their prey *
and seek their food from God.
23
The sun rises, and they slip away *
and lay themselves down in their dens.

Antiphon 2 Praise to the Holy Trinity and undivided Unity. Let us praise God for he has shown us his mercy.

Antiphon 3 Glory and honor to God in three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; glory and praise to him for endless ages.

24
Man goes forth to his work *
and to his labor until the evening.

25
O LORD, how manifold are your works! *
         in wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
26
Yonder is the great and wide sea
with its living things too many to number, *
         creatures both small and great.
27
    There move the ships,
and there is that Leviathan, *
which you have made for the sport of it.
28
All of them look to you *
to give them their food in due season.
29
You give it to them; they gather it; *
you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.
30
You hide your face, and they are terrified; *
         you take away their breath,
and they die and return to their dust.
31
You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; *
and so you renew the face of the earth.
32
May the glory of the LORD endure for ever; *
may the LORD rejoice in all his works.
33
He looks at the earth and it trembles; *
he touches the mountains and they smoke.
34
I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; *
I will praise my God while I have my being.
35
May these words of mine please him; *
I will rejoice in the LORD.
36
Let sinners be consumed out of the earth, *
and the wicked be no more.
37
Bless the LORD, O my soul. *
         Hallelujah!

Antiphon 3 Glory and honor to God in three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; glory and praise to him for endless ages.

FIRST READING           Sirach 42:15-25

I will now call to mind the works of the Lord,
and will declare what I have seen.
By the word of the Lord his works are made;
and all his creatures do his will.
The sun looks down on everything with its light,
and the work of the Lord is full of his glory.
The Lord has not empowered even his holy ones
to recount all his marvellous works,
which the Lord the Almighty has established
so that the universe may stand firm in his glory.
He searches out the abyss and the human heart;
   he understands their innermost secrets.
For the Most High knows all that may be known;
he sees from of old the things that are to come.
He discloses what has been and what is to be,
and he reveals the traces of hidden things.
No thought escapes him,
and nothing is hidden from him.
He has set in order the splendours of his wisdom;
he is from all eternity one and the same.
Nothing can be added or taken away,
and he needs no one to be his counsellor.
How desirable are all his works,
and how sparkling they are to see!
All these things live and remain for ever;
each creature is preserved to meet a particular need.
All things come in pairs, one opposite to the other,
and he has made nothing incomplete.
Each supplements the virtues of the other.
Who could ever tire of seeing his glory?

CANTICLE

Song of the Three Young Men II           Benedictus es, Domine

Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers; *
you are worthy of praise; glory to you.

Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; *
on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.

Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you, beholding the depths; *
in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.

Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

SECOND READING          Ephesians 3:14-21

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen.

MAGNIFICAT (Canticle of Mary)
Antiphon: Let praise and glory resound from all creation / to the Father and the Sole-begotten and the Holy Spirit.

INTERCESSIONS
The Father through the Holy Spirit has given life to the humanity of Christ his Son, and has made him a source of life for us. Let us raise our voices in praise to the triune God:

Glory to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

Father, almighty and eternal God, send the Holy Spirit upon your Church in your Son’s name,
 - preserve it in the unity of charity and in the fullness of truth.

Send laborers into your harvest, Lord, to teach the truth to all nations,
 - and to baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Father, send help to all who suffer persecution in the name of your Son
 - for he promised to send the Spirit of Truth to answer for them.

Father omnipotent, may all men and women come to acknowledge you, together with the Word and the Holy Spirit, as the one true God,
 - may they believe in you, hope in you, and love you.

Father of all the living, bring the dead to share in your glory,
 - the glory of your eternal reign with your Son and the Holy Spirit.

Blessed are you, all-powerful Father, your holiness is infinite and you offer us the gift of sharing in it.

Eternal is your love, alleluia!

Blessed are you, beloved Son of the Father: you have given us the gift of becoming the children of God

Eternal is your love, alleluia!

Blessed are you, Spirit of the Father and the Son: you dwell within us that we might live in God.

Eternal is your love, alleluia!

Blessed are you, God One and Holy: you are the life of the living and the dead.

Eternal is your love, alleluia!

Our Father...

COLLECT
God our Father, who by sending into the world
the Word of truth and the Spirit of sanctification
made known to the human race your wondrous mystery,
grant us, we pray, that in professing the true faith,
we may acknowledge the Trinity of eternal glory
and adore your Unity, powerful in majesty.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of us! Amen.
