Evening Prayer 1
Vigil of Pentecost

Hymn          Veni Creator Spiritus
Veni, creator Spiritus
mentes tuorum visita,
imple superna gratia,
quae tu creasti pectora.

Qui diceris Paraclitus,
altissimi donum Dei,
fons vivus, ignis, caritas
et spiritalis unctio.

Tu septiformis munere,
digitus paternae dexterae
tu rite promissum Patris
sermone ditans guttura.

Accende lumen sensibus,
infunde amorem cordibus,
infirma nostri corporis,
virtute firmans perpeti.

Hostem repellas longius
pacemque dones protinus;
ductore sic te praevio
vitemus omne noxium.

Per te sciamus da Patrem
noscamus atque Filium,
te utriusque Spiritum
credamus omni tempore.
Most Holy Spirit come this day
And fill the hearts which you have made;
With your abundant gifts of grace
Increase your presence in our souls.

For you are called our Advocate,
Consoling Gift from God Most High,
True living Fount and Fire of Love,
Eternal Source of happiness.

You lavish graces sevenfold,
Like finger of Right Hand divine;
You are the Father's promised Gift
To help us witness to the truth.

Instill your light into our minds
And flood our hearts with joy and love;
And with your strength which cannot fail,
Repair the weakness of our state.

Our deadly foe keep far away,
Bestow on us your wondrous peace;
Be with us ev'rywhere we go
To guard us from all sin and harm.

May we the Father know through you
And grow in knowledge of the Son,
And love you, Spirit of them both,
In time and in eternity. Amen.

The Spirit of the Lord + has filled the whole world, / alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Dear brethren (brothers and sisters),
we have now begun our Pentecost Vigil,
after the example of the Apostles and disciples,
who with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, persevered in prayer,
awaiting the Spirit promised by the Lord;
like them, let us, too, listen with quiet hearts to the Word of God.
Let us meditate on how many great deeds
God in times past did for his people
and let us pray that the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father sent as the first fruits for those who believe,
may bring to perfection his work in the world.

Lucernaria
The Spirit of the Lord now fills the whole world,*
alleluia, alleluia.
The Spirit of the Lord now fills the whole world,*
alleluia, alleluia.
The Spirit who searches even the depths of God:
Alleluia, alleluia.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit of the Lord now fills the whole world,*
alleluia, alleluia.

The following canticle, or a metrical version of it, or some other hymn, is then sung:

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

V. The apostles spoke in other tongues, alleluia.
R. The wonderful works of God, alleluia.

Readings

Genesis 11:1-9
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, 'Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.' And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.' The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, 'Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another's speech.' So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

Psalm 33:12-22            Exultate, justi

12
Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD! *
happy the people he has chosen to be his own!
13
The LORD looks down from heaven, *
and beholds all the people in the world.
14
From where he sits enthroned he turns his gaze *
on all who dwell on the earth.
15
He fashions all the hearts of them *
and understands all their works.
16
There is no king that can be saved by a mighty army; *
a strong man is not delivered by his great strength.
17
The horse is a vain hope for deliverance; *
for all its strength it cannot save.
18
Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon those who fear him, *
on those who wait upon his love,
19
To pluck their lives from death, *
and to feed them in time of famine.
20
Our soul waits for the LORD; *
he is our help and our shield.
21
Indeed, our heart rejoices in him, *
for in his holy Name we put our trust.
22
Let your loving-kindness, O LORD, be upon us, *
as we have put our trust in you.

Let us pray.
Almighty God,
on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit:
Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel,
that it may reach to the ends of the earth;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Exodus 19:1-9, 16-20a; 20:18-20
At the third new moon after the Israelites had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that very day, they came into the wilderness of Sinai. They had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. Then Moses went up to God; the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, 'Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.'
So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. The people all answered as one: 'Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do.' Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord. Then the Lord said to Moses, 'I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, in order that the people may hear when I speak with you and so trust you ever after.'
On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, as well as a thick cloud on the mountain, and a blast of a trumpet so loud that all the people who were in the camp trembled. Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God. They took their stand at the foot of the mountain. Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke, because the Lord had descended upon it in fire; the smoke went up like the smoke of a kiln, while the whole mountain shook violently. As the blast of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses would speak and God would answer him in thunder. When the Lord descended upon Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain, the Lord summoned Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.
When all the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking, they were afraid and trembled and stood at a distance, and said to Moses, 'You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, or we will die.' Moses said to the people, 'Do not be afraid; for God has come only to test you and to put the fear of him upon you so that you do not sin.'

Song of the Three Young Men
Benedictus es, Domine

Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers; *
you are worthy of praise; glory to you.

Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; *
on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.

Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you, beholding the depths; *
in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.

Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Let us pray.
O God, who in fire and lightning
gave the ancient Law to Moses on Mount Sinai
and on this day manifested the new covenant
in the fire of the Spirit,
grant, we pray,
that we may always be aflame with that same Spirit
whom you wondrously poured out on your Apostles,
and that the new Israel,
gathered from every people,
may receive with rejoicing
the eternal commandment of your love.
Through Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.

Ezekiel 37:1-14
The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me all round them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. He said to me, 'Son of Man, can these bones live?' I answered, 'O Lord GOD, you know.' Then he said to me, 'Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD.'
So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, 'Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.' I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude.
Then he said to me, 'Son of Man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, “Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.” Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken and will act, says the LORD.'

Psalm 130
De profundis
1
Out of the depths have I called to you, O LORD;
LORD, hear my voice; *
let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.
2
If you, LORD, were to note what is done amiss, *
O LORD, who could stand?
3
For there is forgiveness with you; *
therefore you shall be feared.
4
I wait for the LORD; my soul waits for him; *
in his word is my hope.
5
My soul waits for the LORD,
more than watchmen for the morning, *
more than watchmen for the morning.
6
O Israel, wait for the LORD, *
for with the LORD there is mercy;
7
With him there is plenteous redemption, *
and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

Let us pray.
Lord, God of power,
who restore what has fallen
and preserve what you have restored,
increase, we pray, the peoples
to be renewed by the sanctification of your name,
that all who are washed clean by holy Baptism
may always be directed by your prompting.
Through Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.

Joel 2:28-32
Then afterwards
I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.
Even on the male and female slaves,
in those days, I will pour out my spirit.
I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

The First Song of Isaiah           Ecce Deus
Isaiah 12:2-6

Surely, it is God who saves me; *
I will trust in him and not be afraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, *
and he will be my Savior.
Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing *
from the springs of salvation.
And on that day you shall say, *
Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name;
Make his deeds known among the peoples; *
see that they remember that his Name is exalted.
Sing praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, *
and this is known in all the world.
Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, *
for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Let us pray.
Father of light,
from whom every good gift comes,
send your Spirit into our lives with the power of a mighty wind,
and by the flame of your wisdom open the horizons of our minds.
Loosen our tongues to sing your praise in words beyond the power of speech,
for without your Spirit man could never raise his voice in words of peace
or announce the truth that Jesus is Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Romans 8:14-17, 22-27
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, 'Abba! Father!' it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Psalm 104:25-32

25
O LORD, how manifold are your works! *
in wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
26
Yonder is the great and wide sea
with its living things too many to number, *
creatures both small and great.
27
There move the ships,
and there is that Leviathan, *
which you have made for the sport of it.
28
All of them look to you *
to give them their food in due season.
29
You give it to them; they gather it; *
you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.
30
You hide your face, and they are terrified; *
you take away their breath,
and they die and return to their dust.
31
You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; *
and so you renew the face of the earth.
32
May the glory of the LORD endure for ever; *
may the LORD rejoice in all his works.

Let us pray.

Almighty and ever-living God,
by your will the celebration of Easter is summed up in the mystery of Pentecost.
Grant that the peoples you have scattered across the earth,
speaking many tongues,
may unite in proclaiming your greatness and be gathered back together by the gift of your holy name.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

RESPONSORY
On the day of Pentecost they had all gathered together in one place.
- Out of the heavens suddenly there came the sound of a great wind,
which filled the whole house, alleluia.
The disciples had gathered together in one room. Suddenly there came a sound from heaven.
- Out of the heavens suddenly there came the sound of a great wind,
which filled the whole house, alleluia.

John 7:37-39a

On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, 'Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, “Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.” ' Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive.

RESPONSORY
Since you are all children of God through your faith in Christ Jesus,
- God has sent into your hearts the Spirit of his Son,
crying out: Abba, Father, alleluia.
The Lord has not given us a timid spirit, but a spirit of strength, of love and of self-control.
- God has sent into your hearts the Spirit of his Son,
crying out: Abba, Father, alleluia.

Morning Prayer

HYMN          Beata Nobis Gaudia
Beata nobis gaudia
Anni reduxit orbita,
Cum Spiritus paraclitus
Illapsus est Apostolis.

Ignis vibrante lumine
Linguæ figuram detulit,
Verbis ut essent proflui,
Et caritate fervidi.

Linguis loquuntur omnium,
Turbæ pavent Gentilium:
Musto madere deputant,
Quos spiritus repleverat.

Parata sunt hæc mystice,
Paschæ peracto tempore,
Sacro dierum circulo,
Quo lege fit remissio.

Te nunc Deus piissime
Vultu precamur cernuo,
Illapsa nobis cœlitus
Largire dona Spiritus.

Dudum sacrata pectora
Tua replesti gratia:
Dimitte nostra crimina,
Et da quieta tempora.

Deo Patri sit gloria,
Et Filio, qui a mortuis
Surrexit, ac Paraclito.
In sæculorum sæcula.
The cycle of the Christian year
Completes our happiness today,
As we recall with joy the morn
The Spirit came upon the Church.

The parted tongues of flaming fire
Enkindled each disciple's zeal,
And now would prompt his eager lips
In spreading far and wide the faith.

Surprised, dumb-founded, willed with awe,
The Gentile crowd first lends an ear,
Then brands the speakers with rough scorn
As men unsteady with new wine.

Just like the Old Law's Jubilee,
Remitting debts the fiftieth year,
So fifty days from Easter morn
The plentitude of grace descends.

Most loving Father, hear our prayer,
As low before your throne we bow:
Send down your Holy Spirit's gifts
To fill our souls with strength and light.

As you once flooded loving hearts
With all the favours of your grace,
So now forgive us all our sins,
Bestow on us your gifts of peace.

All glory to our Father, God,
And to our risen Lord, the Son,
Who with the Holy Spirit, reign,
Eternal pow'r beyond all time. Amen.

READING Acts 5:30-32
The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins. We are witnesses of these things, as is the holy Spirit that God has given to those who obey him.

Psalm 118
Confitemini Domino

Antiphon 1: O Lord, how good and gentle is your Spirit in us, alleluia.

1
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; *
his mercy endures for ever.
2
Let Israel now proclaim, *
"His mercy endures for ever."
3
Let the house of Aaron now proclaim, *
"His mercy endures for ever."
4
Let those who fear the LORD now proclaim, *
"His mercy endures for ever."
5
I called to the LORD in my distress; *
the LORD answered by setting me free.
6
The LORD is at my side, therefore I will not fear; *
what can anyone do to me?
7
The LORD is at my side to help me; *
I will triumph over those who hate me.
8
It is better to rely on the LORD *
than to put any trust in flesh.
9
It is better to rely on the LORD *
than to put any trust in rulers.
10
All the ungodly encompass me; *
in the Name of the LORD I will repel them.
11
They hem me in, they hem me in on every side; *
in the name of the LORD I will repel them.
12
They swarm about me like bees;
they blaze like a fire of thorns; *
in the name of the LORD I will repel them.
13
I was pressed so hard that I almost fell, *
but the LORD came to my help.

Antiphon 1: O Lord, how good and gentle is your Spirit in us, alleluia.

Antiphon 2: Let streams and rivers and all creatures that live in the waters sing praise to God, alleluia.

14
The LORD is my strength and my song, *
and he has become my salvation.
15
There is a sound of exultation and victory *
in the tents of the righteous:
16
"The right hand of the LORD has triumphed! *
the right hand of the LORD is exalted!
the right hand of the LORD has triumphed!"
17
I shall not die, but live, *
and declare the works of the LORD.
18
The LORD has punished me sorely, *
but he did not hand me over to death.
19
Open for me the gates of righteousness; *
I will enter them;
I will offer thanks to the LORD.
20
"This is the gate of the LORD; *
he who is righteous may enter."
21
I will give thanks to you, for you answered me *
and have become my salvation.
22
The same stone which the builders rejected *
has become the chief cornerstone.
23
This is the LORD's doing, *
and it is marvelous in our eyes.
24
On this day the LORD has acted; *
we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Antiphon 2: Let streams and rivers and all creatures that live in the waters sing praise to God, alleluia.

Antiphon 3: The apostles preached in different tongues and proclaimed the great works of God, alleluia.

25
Hosanna, LORD, hosanna! *
LORD, send us now success.
26
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; *
we bless you from the house of the LORD.
27
God is the LORD; he has shined upon us; *
form a procession with branches up to the horns of the altar.
28
"You are my God, and I will thank you; *
you are my God, and I will exalt you."
29
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; *
his mercy endures for ever.

Antiphon 3: The apostles preached in different tongues and proclaimed the great works of God, alleluia.

Deuteronomy 16:9-12
You shall count seven weeks; begin to count the seven weeks from the time the sickle is first put to the standing grain. Then you shall keep the festival of weeks to the Lord your God, contributing a freewill-offering in proportion to the blessing that you have received from the Lord your God. Rejoice before the Lord your God—you and your sons and your daughters, your male and female slaves, the Levites resident in your towns, as well as the strangers, the orphans, and the widows who are among you—at the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. Remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and diligently observe these statutes.

TROPARION (Tone 8)
Blessed are You, O Christ our God,
Who have filled the fishermen with wisdom by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit,
and through them caught the universe in Your net.
O Lover of men, glory be to You.

You, Christ, are the king of glory,
the eternal Son of the Father.
When you became man to set us free
you did not shun the Virgin's womb.
You overcame the sting of death
and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
You are seated at God's right hand in glory.
We believe that you will come and be our judge.
Come then, Lord, and help your people,
bought with the price of your own blood,
and bring us with your saints
to glory everlasting.

1 Corinthians 2:1-13
When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.
Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. But we speak God's wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written,
'What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the human heart conceived,
what God has prepared for those who love him'—
these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God's except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual.

In glory at the right hand of God, you gave the Gift of the Father to your disciples,
- send forth your Spirit to renew the world.
You gave your Spirit to the apostles, with the power to forgive sins.

I called to the LORD, and he answered me.
2
Deliver me, O LORD, from lying lips *
and from the deceitful tongue.
3
What shall be done to you, and what more besides, *
O you deceitful tongue?
4
The sharpened arrows of a warrior, *
along with hot glowing coals.
5
How hateful it is that I must lodge in Meshech *
and dwell among the tents of Kedar!

Too long have I had to live *
among the enemies of peace.
7
I am on the side of peace, *
but when I speak of it, they are for war.

He will not let your foot be moved *
and he who watches over you will not fall asleep.
4
Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel *

The LORD himself watches over you; *
the LORD is your shade at your right hand,

The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; *
it is he who shall keep you safe.

Jerusalem is built as a city *
that is at unity with itself;
4
To which the tribes go up,
the tribes of the LORD, *
the assembly of Israel,
to praise the Name of the LORD.
5
For there are the thrones of judgment, *
the thrones of the house of David.

Peace be within your walls *

FIRST READING

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans 8:5-27

Those who live according to the flesh are concerned with the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit with the things of the spirit. The concern of the flesh is death, but the concern of the spirit is life and peace. For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it; and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you.
Consequently, brothers, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, "Abba, Father!" The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved.
Now hope that sees for itself is not hope. For who hopes for what one sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance. In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it intercedes for the holy ones according to God's will.

SECOND READING
From the treatise Against Heresies by Saint Irenaeus, bishop
(Lib. 3, 17. 1-3: SC 34, 302-306)
The sending of the Holy Spirit
When the Lord told his disciples to go and teach all nations and to baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, he conferred on them the power of giving men new life in God. He had promised through the prophets that in these last days he would pour out his Spirit on his servants and handmaids, and that they would prophesy. So when the Son of God became the Son of Man, the Spirit also descended upon him, becoming accustomed in this way to dwelling with the human race, to living in men and to inhabiting God's creation. The Spirit accomplished the Father's will in men who had grown old in sin, and gave them new life in Christ.
Luke says that the Spirit came down on the disciples at Pentecost, after the Lord's ascension, with power to open the gates of life to all nations and to make known to them the new covenant. So it was that men of every language joined in singing one song of praise to God, and scattered tribes, restored to unity by the Spirit, were offered to the Father as the first fruits of all the nations.
This was why the Lord had promised to send the Advocate: he was to prepare us as an offering to God. Like dry flour, which cannot become one lump of dough, one loaf of bread, without moisture, we who are many could not become one in Christ Jesus without the water that comes down from heaven. And like parched ground, which yields no harvest unless it receives moisture, we who were once like a waterless tree could never have lived and borne fruit without this abundant rainfall from above. Through the baptism that liberates us from change and decay we have become one in body; through the Spirit we have become one in soul.
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of Godcame down upon the Lord, and the Lord in turn gave this Spirit to his Church, sending the Advocate from heaven into all the world into which, according to his own words, the devil too had been cast down like lightning. If we are not to be scorched and made unfruitful, we need the dew of God. Since we have our accuser, we need an Advocate as well. And so the Lord in his pity for man, who had fallen into the hands of brigands, having himself bound up his wounds and left for his care two coins bearing the royal image, entrusted him to the Holy Spirit. Now, through the Spirit, the image and inscription of the Father and the Son have been given to us, and it is our duty to use the coin committed to our charge and make it yield a rich profit for the Lord.

RESPONSORY
On the day of Pentecost they had all gathered together in one place.
- Out of the heavens suddenly there came the sound of a great wind,

which filled the whole house, alleluia.

Happy are they all who fear the LORD, *
and who follow in his ways!
2
You shall eat the fruit of your labor; *
happiness and prosperity shall be yours.
3
Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine within your house, *
your children like olive shoots round about your table.
4
The man who fears the LORD *

5

and may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of
your life.
6
May you live to see your children's children; *
may peace be upon Israel.

the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide by what his ears hear;
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist,
and faithfulness the belt around his loins.

The wolf shall live with the lamb,
the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
the calf and the lion and the fatling together,
and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze,
their young shall lie down together;

The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp,
and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den.
They will not hurt or destroy

for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.

John 3:1-8
Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, 'Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.' Jesus answered him, 'Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.' Nicodemus said to him, 'How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?' Jesus answered, 'Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, “You must be born from above.” The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.'

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

O God, who by the mystery of today's great feast
sanctify your whole Church in every people and nation,
pour out, we pray, the gifts of the Holy Spirit
across the face of the earth
and, with the divine grace that was at work
when the Gospel was first proclaimed,
fill now once more the hearts of believers.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
