Mary, To Her Savior's Tomb
Words: John Newton (1779)
Tune: GOTT SEI DANK, 7.7.7.7., Johann A. Freylinghausen (1704).

GOTT SEI DANK (7.7.7.7.)

1. Mary, to her Saviour's tomb,
swiftly at the early dawn;
spice she brought, and sweet perfume;
The Beloved One was gone.

2. The Magdalene weeping stood,
struck with sorrow and surprise;
shedding tears, a plenteous flood,
for the heart supplied her eyes.

3. Jesus, as if always near,
though too often unperceived,
came, a true leader to cheer,
asked to her soul, why she grieved?

4. What a change living words make,
turning our nights into day!
All who e'er weep for Life’s sake,
Love will wipe your tears away.
