HYMN
pdf

Te nostra lætis laudibus,
Iacobe, tollunt cantica,
quem Christus arte ex retium
ad tanta vexit culmina.

Ipso vocante, concitus
cum fratre linguis omnia,
ipsius et fis nominis
verbique præco fervidus.

Testis potentis dexteræ
præclarus alta conspicis,
in monte celsam gloriam,
tristes in horto angustias.

Qui promptus exstas, poscitur
cum passionis poculum,
tu primus ex apostolis
pro Christi amore plecteris.

Iesu fidelis assecla
satorque lucis cælicæ,
mentes fide clarescere,
da spe foveri pectora.

Christi sequi da sedulos
præcepta nos in sæculo,
hymnos ut olim gloriæ
fundamus illi perpetim.

Opening
You are no longer aliens or foreign visitors: you are citizens like all the saints, and part of God’s household. You are part of a building that has the apostles and prophets for its foundations, and Christ Jesus himself for its main cornerstone. As every structure is aligned on him, all grow into one holy temple in the Lord; and you too, in him, are being built into a house where God lives, in the Spirit. - Ephesians 2:19-22

Antiphon: The Lord is glorious in his Saints; Come let us adore him.

Venite (Psalm 95:1-7)

Come let us sing to the Lord; *
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God, *
and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *
and the heights of the hills are his also.

The sea is his, for he made it, *
and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *
Today you would hear his voice,
harden not your hearts.

Antiphon: The Lord is glorious in his Saints; Come let us adore him.

The Psalms

Ant. 1: As he was walking along, Jesus saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, and he called them.

1
I will bless the LORD at all times; *
his praise shall ever be in my mouth.
2
I will glory in the LORD; *
let the humble hear and rejoice.
3
Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD; *
let us exalt his Name together.
4
I sought the LORD, and he answered me *
and delivered me out of all my terror.
5
Look upon him and be radiant, *
and let not your faces be ashamed.
6
I called in my affliction and the LORD heard me *
and saved me from all my troubles.
7
The angel of the LORD encompasses those who fear him, *
     and he will deliver them.
8
Taste and see that the LORD is good; *
happy are they who trust in him!
9
Fear the LORD, you that are his saints, *
for those who fear him lack nothing.
10
The young lions lack and suffer hunger, *
but those who seek the LORD lack nothing that is good.

Ant. 1: As he was walking along, Jesus saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, and he called them.

Ant. 2: Immediately, they left their nets and their father and followed him.

11
Come, children, and listen to me; *
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12
Who among you loves life *
and desires long life to enjoy prosperity?
13
Keep your tongue from evil-speaking *
and your lips from lying words.
14
Turn from evil and do good; *
     seek peace and pursue it.
15
The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, *
and his ears are open to their cry.
16
The face of the LORD is against those who do evil, *
to root out the remembrance of them from the earth.
17
The righteous cry, and the LORD hears them *
and delivers them from all their troubles.
18
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted *
and will save those whose spirits are crushed.
19
Many are the troubles of the righteous, *
but the LORD will deliver him out of them all.
20
He will keep safe all his bones; *
not one of them shall be broken.
21
Evil shall slay the wicked, *
and those who hate the righteous will be punished.
22
The LORD ransoms the life of his servants, *
and none will be punished who trust in him.

Ant. 2: Immediately, they left their nets and their father and followed him.

Ant. 3: You shall drink from the cup I drink from and you shall be baptized as I am baptized.

1
O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you; *
my soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you,
as in a barren and dry land where there is no water.
2
Therefore I have gazed upon you in your holy place, *
that I might behold your power and your glory.
3
For your loving-kindness is better than life itself; *
my lips shall give you praise.
4
So will I bless you as long as I live *
and lift up my hands in your Name.
5
My soul is content, as with marrow and fatness, *
and my mouth praises you with joyful lips,
6
When I remember you upon my bed, *
and meditate on you in the night watches.
7
For you have been my helper, *
and under the shadow of your wings I will rejoice.
8
My soul clings to you; *
your right hand holds me fast.

Ant. 3: You shall drink from the cup I drink from and you shall be baptized as I am baptized.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.

First Reading
Jeremiah 16:14-21

Therefore, the days are surely coming, says the Lord, when it shall no longer be said, ‘As the Lord lives who brought the people of Israel up out of the land of Egypt’, but ‘As the Lord lives who brought the people of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the lands where he had driven them.’ For I will bring them back to their own land that I gave to their ancestors.

I am now sending for many fishermen, says the Lord, and they shall catch them; and afterwards I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the clefts of the rocks. For my eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from my presence, nor is their iniquity concealed from my sight. And I will doubly repay their iniquity and their sin, because they have polluted my land with the carcasses of their detestable idols, and have filled my inheritance with their abominations.

O Lord, my strength and my stronghold,
my refuge on the day of trouble,
to you shall the nations come
from the ends of the earth and say:
Our ancestors have inherited nothing but lies,
worthless things in which there is no profit.
Can mortals make for themselves gods?
   Such are no gods!

‘Therefore I am surely going to teach them, this time I am going to teach them my power and my might, and they shall know that my name is the Lord.’

Canticle

Te Deum Laudamus

You are God: we praise you;
You are the Lord; we acclaim you;
You are the eternal Father:
All creation worships you.
To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,
Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
The glorious company of apostles praise you.
The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.
The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.
Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you;
Father, of majesty unbounded,
your true and only Son, worthy of all worship,
and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

You, Christ, are the king of glory,
the eternal Son of the Father.
When you became man to set us free
you did not shun the Virgin's womb.
You overcame the sting of death
and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
You are seated at God's right hand in glory.
We believe that you will come and be our judge.
Come then, Lord, and help your people,
bought with the price of your own blood,
and bring us with your saints
to glory everlasting.

Second Reading
Mark 1:14-20

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’

As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. .

Second Canticle
Benedictus

Antiphon: Jesus took Peter, James and his brother John and led them up to a high mountain where they could be alone, and he was transfigured before them.

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; *
he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior, *
born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would save us from our enemies, *
from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers *
and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, *
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

Free to worship him without fear, *
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, *
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

To give his people knowledge of salvation *
by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God *
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, *
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.

Antiphon: Jesus took Peter, James and his brother John and led them up to a high mountain where they could be alone, and he was transfigured before them.

Collect:
O gracious God, we remember before you today your servant and apostle James, first among the Twelve to suffer martyrdom for the Name of Jesus Christ; and we pray that you will pour out upon the leaders of your Church that spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among your people; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Personal Prayers and Thanksgivings

Intercessions

Dearly beloved brethren, since we have received from the Apostles a heavenly inheritance, let us cry out in gratitude to the Father for all his gifts:
- Lord, the Apostles sing your praises.
Praise to you, Lord, for the feast of body and blood that was handed down to us by the Apostles:
  -  it refreshes us and gives us life. (R.)
Praise to you for the feast of your word that was prepared for us by the Apostles:
  -  it fills us with light and brings us joy. (R.)
Praise to you for your holy Church, founded upon the Apostles:
  -  it draws us together into one body. (R.)
Praise to you for the purification of baptism and penitence, which we believe in together with the Apostles:
  -  it washes us clean of all sin. (R.)

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

Closing Prayer:
Almighty and ever-living God,
with the blood of Saint James
you consecrated the offering of the first-fruits of the Apostles.
Grant that your Church may draw strength from his martyrdom
and thrive by his intercession.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
Amen.
