LUCERNARIA

Michael shall appear, † Michael the great captain *
who stands guard over the faithful.

Michael and his angels † waged war upon the dragon. *
The dragon, whose name is Satan, was thrown down.

An angel stood at the altar, † holding a golden censer; *
he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of the saints.

I heard the voice † of countless angels round the throne: *
Worthy is the lamb that was slain to receive honor and glory.

Angels and archangels, † thrones and dominions, principalities and powers, virtues of the heavens, *
O praise the Lord of heaven, alleluia.

Opening: I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord.’ As for me, when I was with you, I was not acting on my own will, but by the will of God. Bless him each and every day; sing his praises. So now get up from the ground, and acknowledge God. See, I am ascending to him who sent me. Write down all these things that have happened to you.’ And he ascended. - Tobit 12:15,18,20
HYMN

Angelum pacis Michael ad istam,
Christe, demitti rogitamus aulam,
cuncta quo crebro veniente crescant
prospera nobis.

Angelus fortis Gabriel, ut hostem
pellat antiquum, volitet superne,
sćpius templum cupiens favendo
visere nostrum.

Angelus nobis medicum salutis
mitte de cćlis Raphael, ut omnes
sanet ćgrotos pariterque nostros
dirigat actus.

Christe, sanctorum decus angelorum,
adsit illorum chorus usque nobis,
ut simul tandem Triadi per ćvum
carmina demus. Amen.

Lord of the angels, Christ our loving Savior,
Send holy Michael down among our people,
That he may bring us peacee and true assistance
On our life's journey.

Gabriel's presence, strong, unseen and gentle,
Surely protects us if you will but send him
Into this temple, ever glad to help us,
Shielding from evil.

Send holy Raphael tenderly to heal us,
Bringing sa1vation from our hidden blindness,
And by his counsel may he guide our actions,
Each day and always.

May all the ange1s constantly attend us,
That we may join them praising the one Godhead;
This we implore you,Jesus ever reigning,
Joy of the angels. Amen.

The Psalter

Psalm 34
Benedicam Domine

Antiphon 1: Let us join the angels +in praising the Lord, / as the cherubim and seraphim sing: Holy, holy, holy.

1
I will bless the LORD at all times; *
his praise shall ever be in my mouth.
2
I will glory in the LORD; *
let the humble hear and rejoice.
3
Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD; *
let us exalt his Name together.
4
I sought the LORD, and he answered me *
and delivered me out of all my terror.
5
Look upon him and be radiant, *
and let not your faces be ashamed.
6
I called in my affliction and the LORD heard me *
and saved me from all my troubles.
7
The angel of the LORD encompasses those who fear him, *
     and he will deliver them.
8
Taste and see that the LORD is good; *
happy are they who trust in him!
9
Fear the LORD, you that are his saints, *
for those who fear him lack nothing.
10
The young lions lack and suffer hunger, *
but those who seek the LORD lack nothing that is good.

Antiphon 1: Let us join the angels + in praising the Lord, / as the cherubim and seraphim sing: Holy, holy, holy.

Antiphon 2:I heard the voice + of countless angels round the throne: / Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive honor and glory.

11
Come, children, and listen to me; *
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12
Who among you loves life *
and desires long life to enjoy prosperity?
13
Keep your tongue from evil-speaking *
and your lips from lying words.
14
Turn from evil and do good; *
     seek peace and pursue it.
15
The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, *
and his ears are open to their cry.
16
The face of the LORD is against those who do evil, *
to root out the remembrance of them from the earth.
17
The righteous cry, and the LORD hears them *
and delivers them from all their troubles.
18
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted *
and will save those whose spirits are crushed.
19
Many are the troubles of the righteous, *
but the LORD will deliver him out of them all.
20
He will keep safe all his bones; *
not one of them shall be broken.
21
Evil shall slay the wicked, *
and those who hate the righteous will be punished.
22
The LORD ransoms the life of his servants, *
and none will be punished who trust in him.

Antiphon 2:I heard the voice + of countless angels round the throne: / Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive honor and glory.

Antiphon 3:Angels and archangels, + thrones and dominions, principalities and powers, virtues of the heavens, / O praise the Lord of heaven, alleluia

1
Hallelujah!
Praise God in his holy temple; *
praise him in the firmament of his power.
2
Praise him for his mighty acts; *
praise him for his excellent greatness.
3
Praise him with the blast of the ram's-horn; *
Praise him with lyre and harp.
4
Praise him with timbrel and dance; *
praise him with strings and pipe.
5
Praise him with resounding cymbals; *
     praise him with loud-clanging cymbals.
6
Let everything that has breath *
     praise the Lord.
     Hallelujah!

Antiphon 3:Angels and archangels, + thrones and dominions, principalities and powers, virtues of the heavens, / O praise the Lord of heaven, alleluia

First Reading
Daniel 12:1-3

"At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.

praise him and highly exalt him for ever.

Second Reading

Mark 13:21-27

And if anyone says to you at that time, "Look! Here is the Messiah!" or "Look! There he is!" —do not believe it. False messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. But be alert; I have already told you everything.

'But in those days, after that suffering,

the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light,
and the stars will be falling from heaven,
and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

Then they will see "the Son of Man coming in clouds" with great power and glory. Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.'

Second Canticle
Magnificat

Antiphon: The angel Gabriel spoke to Mary and said: You will conceive and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; *
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed: *
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him *
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm, *
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, *
and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, *
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel, *
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

The promise he made to our fathers, *
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.

Antiphon: The angel Gabriel spoke to Mary and said: You will conceive and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.

Responsory
Clouds of incense rose in the presence of the Lord.
Clouds of incense rose in the presence of the Lord.
From the hand of the angel incense rose
in the presence of the Lord.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
Clouds of incense rose in the presence of the Lord.

Collect
Everlasting God, who have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Intercessions

The angels carry out God's will. Let us pray that we too may listen carefully for his voice and hear his call as we say:
(R.)We beg you, hear us.

That our prayers may rise like a pleasant fragrance before you,
- through the hands of your angels.(R.)

That our prayers may be brought to your altar on high,
- through the hands of your angels.(R.)

That we may proclaim glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth,
- with the multitude of the heavenly hosts.(R.)

That the angels may receive us at the end of our days,
- and lead us home to paradise.(R.)

That the holy standard-bearer, Michael, may bring into the light of your presence,
- the souls of those who have died.(R.)

Our Father…

COLLECT
O God, who dispose in marvelous order
ministries both angelic and human,
graciously grant
that our life on earth may be defended
by those who watch over us
as they minister perpetually to you in heaven.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
