This is a list of the litanies which are formally indulgenced in the Catholic Church since Vatican II: Sacred Heart, Holy Name, Precious Blood, Blessed Virgin, St. Joseph, and The Saints.

Although the origin of this Litany is unknown, it is believed that St. Bernadine of Siena and St. John Capistrano had a hand in the writing. Pope Leo XIII gave it universal recommendation in 1886. It is believed that a Dominican as early as the 13th century founded the Holy Name Society to promote reverence for the name of Jesus. The presider says the parts in normal text. Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, You have appointed Your only begotten Son the Redeemer of the world and willed to be appeased by his Blood. Grant, we beg You, that we may worthily adore the price of our salvation, and through its power be safeguarded from the evils of the present life, so that we may rejoice in its fruits forever in heaven. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pope Sixtus V approved and indulgenced this litany in 1857. It is a simplified version of more ancient Marian litanies common even in the 12th century. Several of the current invocations are additions by popes after Sixtus.

The Litany of St. Joseph was approved for the universal Church by Pope St. Pius X on March 18, 1909.

O God, in Your ineffable providence You were pleased to choos Blessed Joseph to be the spouse of Your most holy Mother; grant, we beg You, that we may be worthy to have him for our intercessor in heaven whom on eath we venerate as our protector; You who live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

This is to believed to be the most ancient of the Church's litanies. St. Basil in the 4th century mentioned the litany (in a slightly different form). It was prescribed by Pope Gregory the Great in 590 A.D. for a public procession of thanksgiving after a plague that had ravaged Rome. Traditionally it has been used on Rogation Days, the Feast of St. Mark (April 25th), in the Mass of Ordination, before conferring of major orders, during forty hours' devotion, and during religious profession.

Let us pray. From You, Lord come holiness in our desires, right thinking in our plans, and justice in our actions.
